My girlfriend (vegan) and I (non-vegan) have been fans of Tumerico since they opened and originally identified as an all-vegan restaurant. Our last experience, however, was somewhat disappointing.
My girlfriend ordered an iced matcha latte as she usually does, but was given an horchata. The two hostesses working the front also made the same observation and took the horchata back to replace it with a matcha latte. The second drink that was brought out still looked the same as the first horchata, however the individual who gave us the drink tried to convince us that the matcha powder they used was less green than usual and that the flavor was still right. We knew it wasn't a matcha since my girlfriend orders it all the time. Luckily, the third drink they brought out was indeed a matcha.
In the past, the atmosphere seemed to be more easy-going and approachable. This time it seemed less relaxed and the staff was overly-attentive as soon as we walked in. This is also the first instance where we experienced the food just being average. The rice was undercooked and the beans lacked flavor, where in the past these two sides were just as good as the main dish.
Additionally, the original quirks that made Tumerico stand out from other Mexican restaurants have changed. We're disappointed that they've lost their identity as an all-vegan restaurant FIRST. Even after they made the decision to offer cheese and eggs, all of the dishes were still vegan by default. Now, some dishes are dairy-based and they do not offer a vegan cheese option. We also miss the authentic Mexican plates that they used to serve their food on.
Part of our criticism comes from the fact that we know how good Tumerico used to be. We've only had amazing experiences here, and we never thought we would rate Tumerico anything...
Read moreTumerico was absolutely delicious! I came here with my family while visiting them in Tucson.
It's a very casual and simple looking location, but it's clean and welcoming inside. I loved how all of the food options were healthy and vegan versions of food that is typically very indulgent and cheesy! I was also very pleased to see that this freshness and quality had not sacrificed the great taste of the food.
You order at the counter in the front, then you bring your number to a table in the adjacent room. The cashier was extremely friendly and helpful with explaining different food and latte options and giving some recommendations.
I ended up going with the cuban tacos plate and a lavender latte, with the food brought out within a couple minutes! I was impressed with the speed, as it was relatively crowded on the day we had gone. Aside from that, I was also very impressed with the food itself. Everything was so fresh, crisp, and delicious, so to speak! I did not feel like I was missing out on anything from a regular taco, and I felt great eating it because it was so healthy and fresh! It was accompanied with several healthy side items, including a small salad and some rice and black beans. I could go on and on about how good all of it was! It was a pretty good value for all that you get - I didn't think I would be able to finish it, but I did, as I found it so good! My latte was also a very soothing and tasty accompaniment to the food.
Tumerico has me won over! I'm not vegan, although I do try to eat plant-based foods when I can. I thought everything here was absolutely delicious - no flavor or taste enjoyment sacrificed for its healthiness and freshness! I'm very impressed and would be happy to come back whenever I'm in...

One standout dish that had me coming back for more was the Cuban tacos. The tortillas were perfectly soft, cradling a mouthwatering medley of flavors. Each bite was an explosion of zest, thanks to the perfectly spiced jackfruit filling, which mimicked the traditional Cuban flavors beautifully. Topped with fresh salsa and a drizzle of tangy vegan crema, these tacos are a testament to how delectable vegan food can be.
Equally impressive was the vegan rendition of ropa vieja. Traditionally a meat-based dish, Tumerico has masterfully transformed it using shredded jackfruit, cooked to perfection with a rich and savory tomato sauce. The dish was layered with peppers, onions, and a blend of spices that transported me straight to Havana with every forkful. Served alongside a generous portion of rice and black beans, it was a hearty and satisfying meal that left me feeling nourished and delighted.
The ambiance of Tumerico is as inviting as the food, with a cozy yet chic atmosphere that makes it perfect for both casual lunches and special dinners. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate about vegan cuisine, always ready to offer recommendations and ensure that your dining experience is nothing short of exceptional.
Whether you're a committed vegan or simply exploring plant-based options, Tumerico is a must-visit. The Cuban tacos and ropa vieja are just the beginning of their culinary delights, promising a dining experience that is both delicious and...
