Mixed Feelings — Great Atmosphere, Unwelcoming Service
I had high hopes for this place, especially after reading so many glowing reviews about the warm, friendly vibe — but unfortunately, my experience was a bit different. Michael wasn’t there during my visit, which might’ve made a big difference based on what others have shared.
The Good: The atmosphere is charming and nostalgic — like stepping into a Route 66 time capsule. Classic tunes were playing, and the cozy interior made me feel like I’d just walked into a local favorite, the kind of place where old friends gather over morning coffee and swap stories. It’s got a lot of character, and I imagine it shines even more during a busier morning crowd.
The food was solid. I had a sub sandwich — about six inches long on freshly made bread. It was well-prepared and satisfying for a simple lunch, though nothing particularly standout.
The Not-So-Good: Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. The woman behind the counter was curt and disengaged — not rude, but definitely not welcoming either. She didn’t offer any recommendations or make much effort to connect, which stood in stark contrast to the friendly atmosphere around her. I tried to bring some warmth to the interaction, but it didn’t really land. Maybe she was having a tough day — we all have them — but it did color the experience.
I also ordered a "dirty chai," and to be honest, it missed the mark. I've had a lot of chai lattes with espresso, and this one was overly bitter, lacking the balance and warmth you’d expect. A touch of sweetness might go a long way.
Final Thoughts: Despite the rough service, I stuck around and enjoyed some quiet time on the couch with my laptop. There’s definitely potential here — the space is inviting, and I’d be willing to give it another shot, especially if Michael’s in the house. Just hoping for a little more heart and...
Read moreLiterally couldn't wait to write a 5 star review once I sat down. GREAT atmosphere! The names on the wall are just such a fantastic idea. And the FOOD!?! EVERYTHING is baked/made right here by Michael Carlson and his wife (who we didn't meet, unfortunately). Michael was such a genuine fellow, and lovely to chat to. The only downside for me personally, is that a custom plain breakfast burrito couldn't be made to meet my dietary needs - but that didn't even dent my 5 star review. I got a Greek yogurt and berry parfait that had the PERFECT amount of granola!
This will definitely be a place to stop at every single time we drive through this way in the future.
Thank you to the reviewer who said it was "better than the shifty hotel breakfast anyday" - that gave my husband a chuckle and sealed our decision to try it out.
Don't hesitate!...
Read moreThis place is amazing!!! First, the coffee and cappuccino are absolutely perfect. They use a brand of air roasted coffee called Aroma, roasted in Santa Fe. It’s now our go to coffee. Second, Their baked goods are world class spectacular. We had a breakfast tart with spinach and cheese, and a croissant. Impossibly good!!! We also bought a loaf of their sourdough bread, Mexican wedding cookies, and their “Ted Lasso Biscuits” . Everything was beyond delicious! This place makes us wish we lived in Tucumcari. But we were just passing thru and wanted to stop someplace for coffee. We are soo glad we chose this place. We were towing our Airstream and found easy parking on the side street. If you find yourself anywhere near Tucumcari, don’t miss this hidden gem for world class coffee and baked goods. It’s definitely...
