The latest venture from McNellies Group, Red Light Chicken, has a reputation to live up to amongst other Tulsa Staples. Was excited to try it, the former restaurant in the building, El Guapo’s, has been closed for some years. Decided to go opening weekend, we had a reservation and were seated immediately. Minimal, modern, and sleek decoration and aesthetic. Hostess was kind when we were seated, all the staff was great. Friendly, bustling environment, lots of families and young people, adults as well. Full bar downstairs. Multiple levels in the restaurant adds a nice concept. Experience was great!
Food was good, it was great chicken and the sides were great as well. Rolls with honey butter were amazing. The chicken sandwich was very good and the spicy mayo is very spicy! Though I’m afraid it was a bit overpriced. People come here for fried chicken, and it’s a cool vibe being downtown and all, but it’s just simply more expensive than I would expect.
Additionally, the marketed “Family Meal” is not a deal at all and is confusing. Our party had 4 people get this deal and it would have been cheaper to get everything in the deal separately. Not sure what this concept is supposed to do, but it doesn’t save people money so beware. The waitress didn’t seem to understand it either (I understand she didn’t write the menu, but still). They comped us a 1/2 chicken to-go when we asked about it. They were also out of sweet tea at 6pm.
Overall, McNellie’s group delivers a new high-quality, Downtown Tulsa staple with great food, very friendly staff, and a unique, distinguishable concept that elevates the Blue Dome district, but prices are a bit high for what you get and main menu item is confusing....
Read moreMe and my family visited this restaurant after the MLK parade on Monday, because we heard the food was good. We had a party of 11. I had a Dirty Shirley which was superb. Some of us ordered the Big family meal which is $16 a person. All our food was served hot. Chicken was juicy, flavorful and crispy. The salad, mashed potatoes, gravy, mac and cheese were all good, and the green beans were ok. Rolls were delicious with the honey butter. Unfortunately, our waitress Holly was not familiar with the menu at all. She had to keep asking questions which was ok but did not explain things clearly. The tickets were all messed up and they charged my 5 yr. old grandson $16 and tried to charge my 2 yr. old granddaughter the same because they ate off our meal. Which was not explained and is ridiculous because neither can eat $16 worth of food in one sitting. We never got our dessert that came with the meal and she never asked us about it. We were in there for an extra hour and a half after we were done eating waiting on them to get the tickets right. At this point babies were crying and the other children had gotten restless. So at this point I totally forgot about the dessert because of all the confusion and I really wanted to try the peach cobbler I was eyeing on the menu. I may try this place again in the future because the food was good but I will need a better waitress, who knows the menu and hopefully I get all my food. We will...
Read moreWaited way too long to be waited on. I strongly suggest finding a different place to eat if you're in the area. The food was not very good either. I have no idea how they pay their bills with the type of service and product they produce. I guess it's the view because that's the only pleasant thing about the establishment. The spicy chicken recipe is just overly hot. Makes no sense why someone would even call it seasoned. It's just hot. Nothing absolutely nothing would ever get me back in the door. I think they might be a little bit racist to white people, with the way my girlfriend and I just stood there for over five minutes. We then left, but were hungry and tired so we went back in. It was a whole process. Maybe they will treat people of a different color more like customers. I will never return there. If anyone asks I'll make sure they know. Actually, I will willingly tell them about my experience. I want everyone to know that they are a horrible business. You could not pay me to go back there. It was worth the $37.00 to know that Red Light Chicken is racist to white people and have no idea what spicy chicken is. A real joke of a place. I also had to get up and get my own tea. I guess it was an experience of awareness to know that racism does still exist. The colors never matter...
