My experience with this Akira Ramen establishment was very disappointing. I have fond memories of Akira Ramen, unfortunately they are tainted by this location. It wasn't just that it was a bad dinner, it is that I know Akira Ramen can do better.
To start off with, the wait time was about 30 minutes on a Monday night which was fine, as I called ahead to see if they did reservations which they do not. They Should... My party of 4 were sat quickly after the 30 minutes, which is where everything went downhill from there. I did not realize this location was in a "soft opening" mode, nor was I informed when I called ahead. I learned this as they did not have any alcoholic beverages available to me. I ordered a diet-coke which came to me cold with little to no ice. And by little Ice, I mean 1 to 2 cubes to be exact. The beverage I was served would of been much better if it it was filled with ice. At some point my teeth just started to hurt over the abundance of soda. Add more ice to your drinks.
When it came time for my girlfriend to order, she ordered the chicken ramen with spicy broth, I ordered the volcano ramen, my one friend ordered the shrimp tempura ramen, and my last friend ordered the chicken ramen as well. Here are some notes on our Ramen Experience: Undercooked Ramen Noodles. Ramen noodles should NOT be served andante. The spicy broth is bland and the regular broth is even more tasteless and bland. Egg in ramen should come soft-boiled, yoke. Not hard boiled. Needs more veggies added to the ramen, not just bland, sad looking, bamboo shoots.
My girlfriend's chicken ramen came NOT with spicy broth as she ordered. When she asked for hot sauce such as siracha or anything to spice up her ramen that was supposed to come with spicy broth. They brought her spicy mayo? Who puts mayo in their ramen? That is disgusting. Allergy Warning She is allergic to shellfish, which her ramen definitely was somehow cross contaminated with, lucky she only had mild symptoms for the rest of the night after we left. I do not know if this warning is on their menu or not. It was not told to us by the server.
My Akira Volcano Ramen: To but it simply, I can't believe this establishment produced what was supposed to be spicy ramen into bland, flavorless, not spicy whatsoever ramen. There was hardly anything in it besides a hardboiled egg which was gross, two pieces of pork which after eating nothing was really left besides undercooked noodles. My friend who ordered the 2nd chicken ramen's his did not arrive to the table until almost 10 minutes after ours did.
Serving Side: DITCH THE ROBOT! I have no idea why there is some stupid gimmicky robot driving around bowls of ramen hindering food coming to a table. A server still has to take the bowl off the dumb robot and place it on the table. Maybe if it was just the humanoid servers bringing my friend's ramen to him, it wouldn't of arrived 10 minutes after ours did when we were all starving. Our server was fine, however she spent 15 to 20 minutes talking to another table before getting us our check which I begrudgingly still tipped because I always do, on.
We were all very eager to leave after being served horrible, bland, tasteless, ramen. I was really looking forward to having a Akira Ramen closer to me. Now I am not so certain I will be ever going back to this location for all my...
Read moreTorn between a 2 and a 3 for this place. I really don't get the hype- my husband and I love ramen and we even loved the Akira in Rockville where we lived for ten years. This Akira location is struggling IMO. We've been at least five times and have the exact same issues every single time. Our water is never refilled, we are forgotten about until we eventually get up and find someone to bring our check, the ramen is lackluster, the soup comes out tepid (not steaming hot) and the restaurant itself is ice cold. If you get put in the side room with sliding doors, prepare to freeze to death, it feels about 58 degrees in there.
I've ordered the tantanmen ramen four or five times and the first time it came without meat so they brought me cold, unseasoned pork in a cup to add after the fact. Room temperature ramen, unseasoned cold pork. Not great. The second third and fourth time it came with meat but the pork has no flavor. The standard vegetables all cost extra ($1-$2 each for a couple box choy or half an unseasoned egg or even just a spicy sauce). The flavor of the ramen at Tsunami in downtown Frederick is truly leagues beyond this Akira location.
Multiples times we have been completely forgotten about. We'll sit with empty glasses and plate and bowls for at least 20 minutes before getting up to find someone to bring us a check and give us some water. I wish they'd leave carafes on the table so I could pour myself water.
I gave this place a bunch of opportunities to improve over the past year but it is just an unpleasant dining experience. Our last time there my husband and I decided that it would always be worth the drive and parking hassle to go to downtown Frederick to have...
Read moreAkira Ramen & Sushi in Urbana, Maryland, is a delightful destination for any food enthusiast. This restaurant offers a captivating blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine, with a menu that is as diverse as it is delicious.
The sushi rolls are the shining stars of Akira's menu. Each roll is a work of art, meticulously crafted and bursting with flavor. The freshness of the ingredients is palpable, and the balance between the various elements is nothing short of perfection.
The chicken and salmon teriyakis are also commendable. They are cooked to perfection, with the right balance of sweet and savory flavors. The tender chicken and succulent salmon are a testament to the chef's expertise and attention to detail.
However, every culinary journey has its bumps, and at Akira, it was the waygu yakitori. While the quality of the meat was undeniable, the dish lacked the expected punch. It was a bit of a letdown in an otherwise stellar lineup.
But what truly sets Akira apart is the ambiance and service. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff is attentive and friendly, ensuring a dining experience that is as pleasant as the food itself.
In conclusion, Akira Ramen & Sushi is a gem in Urbana, offering a delightful dining experience that will leave you craving for more. Despite a minor hiccup, it remains a must-visit for anyone seeking to explore the rich and diverse flavors of...
