I had a hankering for fish and chips one day and offered to take my wife out to lunch. After googling "fish and chips near me" I found The Sardines Can. I remembered I had been here once before with family a long time ago but couldn't recall anything too memorable about it either way so decided to give it another shot.
When we arrived there weren't too many people in the dining area so we made our way towards an open table. When we got there it looked like someone had spilled their drink when in fact it was the roof leaking onto the middle of the table. Ok, it hadn't rained in a while that's reasonable I guess. We picked a different table and ordered. I got my fish and chips with a side of fried clams and she got a burger. The fried clams came out first and were great, exactly what I hope they'd be and they even changed the mind of my wife who previously hated fried clams. Perfect start to a great lunch, or so I thought. Fish and chips arrived and looked a little suspect. I tried to cut a piece off of what looked like a tail cut and was not able to get my fork through it. I employed the knife and I couldn't get the knife through it. I tried the other pieces and they were also hard to cut and one was raw in the middle. Needless to say I sent it back figuring just a bad couple pieces of fish or something and reordered the same thing. Mistake. Came back worse! To top it off my wife doesn't like to eat on her own so her Burger sat and got cold. I ordered a burger to replace my fish and chips but thankfully those fried clams quenched my hankering for the time being.
I have to say the waitress that helped us that day was the only saving grace in the restaurant. She was just about to cash out for the day so I feel real sorry that she had to deal with us and I know how embarrassing it is when your team outright fails you in the face of the customer. but if it wasn't for her this review would have far fewer words and far fewer Stars.
I don't think we'll be going back to the Sardine Can anytime soon which is a real shame. I'll miss those...
Read moreMy friend made a reservation for our party of six. When the first two of us arrived, we told them we had a reservation and they told us they don’t take reservations. They said to sit anywhere so we took a table outside. The rest of our party showed up and the man who said he made the reservation was adamant that he made a reservation. They didn’t bring us menus or pay any attention to us for the first 30 minutes. We only stayed because it was a nice day outside. A server finally showed up when three of us were away from the table (restroom break) and took the order for the other three people. She didn’t come back for at least 20 minutes to take the order for the rest of the table. When the food arrived, it was a bit cold and quite flavorless.
Two people in our party were little people. They each ordered a drink. While they were still drinking their drink the waitress (Marna) came to our table and told them they couldn’t have a second one because they were too little to handle a second drink. They never even tried to order a second drink. NOT OKAY! Not impressed with this place at all. We...
Read moreMy wife & I wanted to have lunch along the Marina in Vallejo on Saturday, March 5, 2022. There was a choice between Zio Fraedos or he Sardine Can. Unfortunately, we choose The Sardine Can. We ordered the crab louie (even thought it cost $30) and the clam chowder. I was looking forward to a nice, fresh crab louie since I have not had one in years but we were extremely dissapointed. It came with some greens (looked like the same mixed greens we get at Costco), four slices of a wilted tomatoe, an old grey colored hard boiled egg and tasteless crab. It was the worst salad I have ever had. In addition, it was so small that I could cup the entire salad in my hand. The clam chowder was thin and oily; you could actually see the separation of the oil; one of the worst clam chowders I have ever had. The only thing good was the waitress. We did not complain since she was very nice. The Sardine Can is one of the worst restaurants we have ever been to. Now, the city of Vallejo leaves a bad taste...
