Thanks to you and your great baking crew, I definitely did not go hungry over my birthday last week. The veggie quiche and zucchini bread were both delicious. But the star of the show was the butterscotch pie. It was literally the best I’d ever had.
My wife, Tami has been surprising me with birthday butterscotch pies from bakeries in many of the places we’ve lived over the years. There is undoubtedly a real art to making them, because the flavors and crusts have varied widely. Your crust: perfect. Your butterscotch filling: perfect. The whipped cream for topping: yes, please. Five stars? No, TEN stars!
I closed my eyes when I took bites of the creamy goodness. I took my sweet time, savoring each and every sweet bite. And I actually shed a couple of tears, because my personal history with this particular baked piece of heaven goes way back to when I was a little boy in Los Angeles. My dad was a rare book dealer, and he often took me on his driving errands across the city. If I was lucky, we’d wind up at a hole in the wall drive in restaurant called Goody Goody in Santa Monica. It had a horseshoe-shaped counter staffed by waitresses with starched uniforms and pointed caps who always called you “honey” or “sweetie” when you ordered. They served up standard diner fare. Burgers, french fries and malts. But they had an awesome array of pies and my dad loved the butterscotch pie. I must have inherited the butterscotch gene, because I loved it, too. Goody Goody is long gone, but I will always remember it. That’s what I was thinking about as I enjoyed my birthday butterscotch pie….and why I shed a couple of happy tears.
Fortunately, I was in a sharing mood and let Tami and our son visiting from out of town have some, too. The end of dessert came with much appreciation for the Bleu Door Bakery. Tami and I moved here in 2016 and we considered ourselves very lucky when we discovered your place shortly afterwards. We’ve enjoyed both dining in and to-go. We read the recent Columbian article about your skyrocketing operating costs and your recent health problems. We both hope you’re feeling better and that you can move forward with Bleu Door. We plan on stepping up our support, especially since Tami mentioned that you’re now offering mini-butterscotch pie tarts! As if we needed an excuse to enjoy your food.
I’m wondering if you have considered a Go Fund Me project that focuses specifically on what looks like your biggest need: a new roof? I think your customers would rally to the cause. We would happily chip in. Just a thought.
Anyway, just wanted to say thank you again to you and your team for all the work you do, and the delicious...
Read moreThis is a good bakery, with good products and great staff. The reason of the 2 starts is due to their incredible slow service and poor organization managing the customer line.
Hello, as requested I am updating with some suggestions that might help to increase customer service and agility of your business.
1st suggestion. It is to leverage better the personnel in the counter. It's common to see staff members in the counter simply doing nothing AKA: moving boxes, relocating pastries that were relocated 2 minutes before etc. That staff could be very well serving other customers who are waiting on the line.
2nd suggestion: It's common that people spend several seconds looking into the shelves before selecting what to buy. This means that you could make the customers to walk first throughout the shelves, so they can select what they want to purchase and while 1 customer is looking what to buy, you could have another customer purchasing the product they previously choose. The current model does not work because 1 customer is taking the entire space (the showing area plus the paying area) this means that after a customer hasn't left that area another one can't go in) I understand covid precautions, but actually there is more than 6 feet distance between the showing area and the payment area, so you could have 2 customers in that area and be more agile).
3rd suggestion: create a fast pickup option in the mobile app, where you have predefined some products that you can order and pick up within minutes, so for those customers who just want a loaf of bread, they can buy it directly with the app and pick it up, versus waiting in line 20 minutes like it happened to me last week. I am suggesting here an immediate pick up, not placing an order 1h or days ago. It would apply to simple products where the only prep required for you is to pick the item from the shelf and place it in a...
Read moreFantastic for Sunday brunch! Our family of 4 arrived at about 9:30 on a Sunday morning - were greeted by the hostess & seated right away. Waters arrived quickly, and after a short few minutes, our server Vincent, came by. First, he thanked us for coming in & for our patience as he let us know he was the server for the entire lower level. A few minutes went by & then he came back to take our drink orders. Drinks arrived quickly & the vanilla syrup used in the latte was delicious!!! A few more minutes later, Vincent came by to take our food order. Later on in our meal, he came by again, and thanked us again for coming in & for our patience. Honestly, we were just having a lazy Sunday morning with no rush to be on our way - so it worked out perfectly. Vincent came back to collect our payment & he told us about the owner, products they purchase for their high-quality food & drink, etc. We never got the feeling he was flustered or stressed - a very pleasant server. For the food: I ordered the biscuits & gravy - it was delicious. Thick gravy over bacon & cheddar biscuits. My husband ordered the Bleu Lady, which is their version of the classic Croque Madame. Very rich & delicious. The bechamel was really tasty!! Our oldest ordered the Classic Breakfast & enjoyed it very much. Our youngest order a la carte items of scrambled eggs, & bacon, & a butter croissant with jam. He was in heaven! A tiny suggestion would be to offer a small kids menu, since right now this is not something offered. But, we were able to still find great bites for our little guy, so it wasn’t a huge deal. We were so stuffed that we didn’t have any room for pastries, but we’ll definitely be back for that on its...
