Day of Visit: July 25th, Friday (lunch time) My wife and I immediately felt welcome and home (she said this place is what she imagines when thinking of the area she grew up in).We walked through the door and was hit by the smell of good food and the sight of a whole crowd of hungry but smiling faces. Showed up at the full swing of the lunch rush, sat down for a bit while we looked through the menu, the tvs can be hard to read due to glare, but once you power through it everything is tempting, very hard to decide on what to get. The whole time we were deciding I was watching the kitchen crank out order after order, the crowd of people stayed full because of people coming in but nobody waited very long for food.... Food that's cooked fresh was leaving faster than I've ever seen any fast food restaurant cut through a crowd (how long have you waited through drive through lines lately? And I'm just getting coffee cause I'm boujie and don't like eating fake food). I've worked in many kitchens and none of them have mastered the art of communication like J&K has, every single employee was loud enough to be heard while not yelling or stressing out at each other, nobody was biting off more than they could chew, the assembly team was assembling the proper packaging and sides for everything the guy working the fryer had in the oil, ensuring all orders left fresh and timely. Truly a well oiled machine (shout out to the manager who's name a regrettably can't recall) Finally decided on jerk chicken egg rolls and the fish basket, both were absolutely fantastic. Portions were large compared to the price and everything was fresh and delicious and seasoned perfectly, everything had flavor but wasn't over flavored, fries aren't the best I've ever had I wish I tried one of the sides fully prepped in house they were good enough and seasoned pleasantly but were obviously the only pre frozen food we received. My wife did believe the fries needed an extra minute in the fryer. I like tasting the actual food in eating and have seasoning there too accent it, and that's what this place did, perfect seasoning shows off and accents the flavor of the food, there's a fine line between not enough and too much and they have it down. At the end of the rush the manager immediately hit the floor to check on the people dining in. With the set up and the prices I was not expecting service attention and quality that I would expect from a reservation only spot at a place set up to be streamlined to go food based
Bathroom kept in decent condition. Lemonade they serve is real lemonade from real lemons and other real fruit, if I lived closer I'd probably eat there...

Read moreGreat work for the kind of hole in the wall dive that this was.
I tend to grade my restaurants on a curve. What I mean by that is if I were to walk into a fine dining establishment that has set high standards, I'm more prone to ding the restaurant for more minor infractions.
So bear in mind as I am giving J&K Grill high marks, I'm still not necessarily saying this is for everyone. But, if you are in the mood for an established community feature, or some creative local flavor, or some food that falls far on the unhealthy and comforting side of your dining choices, I really think you should give this place a try.
The first thing I noticed as we walked in was how busy it was, which was a great sign. We were directed to the end of the line, and were invited to look at the specials. I had to draw some inferences between looking at the chalkboard of specials and the regular menu to decide that the "cheddar smash" was a cheeseburger. I didn't doubt for a minute that I would enjoy it, but I tip my hat to the chef because the patties were cooked perfectly. No charring or burning at all. And using Dr Pepper as an ingredient in the cooking process? Very original!
I ended up being so engaged in my conversation with my table mate that I failed to eat my fries before they got cold. So I'm not sure if they were fresh out of the fryer, or if they were cold to begin with, but I'll extend the assumption to the restaurant that they did the fries correctly.
The dining area was limited; there were about seven tables there, but most of the patrons seemed just as happy to take their orders to go anyway.
The only real issue I saw was simply of training. The girl working the counter seemed overwhelmed, but I can't fault the restaurant for that, because the manager or the owner was also running the grill right next to her, and was constantly coaching her and helping her improve. I'm confident on my next visit, the issue will be resolved.
4.5 stars,...
