All Chinese fast food is pretty low quality food and we've tried pretty much every hole in the wall in Hampton Roads. This particular hole in the wall has some unique qualities to mention that make it above all others earning it a 5-star review from us.
Firstly, the vegetables are VERY fresh and they include things like Zucchini not typically seen in the average fast food setting. Secondly, they will customize your food completely different from the menu for you if your order properly and explain in the notes section well what you want. When you make special requests they remember you and get to know you over time as a regular customer and you can tell that care went into cooking your food.
The food is not overly greasy and is more in line with home cooked but you need to know how to order and what to stay away from as some things aren't any better here than elsewhere aka not that great. For instance, the American food on the menu here like all Chinese places is greasy and boring, with the exception of the Chicken Wings which are above average for most places, seasoned well and very crispy.
The Sweet and Sour Shrimp is about as good as you could hope get anywhere. The Singapore Street noodles is a lower cost alternative to PF Chang's about half the cost and still tastes great so is highly recommended. They are a light rice noodle with Curry sauce and scallions, egg. Shrimp, chicken and pork. The Teriyaki chicken is above average, about the best we've had at this type of place. The Hot & Sour soup here is better than just about anywhere in the area (we order it without tofu and chicken because the vegetables are tastier being so fresh). If you like Egg Foo Young the gravy here is great. The Moo Shu is good and really filling, usually enough for leftovers and reheats well. The mixed vegetables with Ginger and Scallions is different than other places, it floats in too much sauce that can be messy but it tastes very good. The Hot & Spicy Shrimp while good is not spicy at all, it’s more like the red sauce from Sweet & Sour without being sweet.
Another important thing to note: In over 200 orders over the course of this year this place misread our notes only twice, and made it correct both times. We had sauce spill in the bag maybe five times of those orders creating a sticky little mess.
We find that ordering on the Beyond Menu website is faster and easier and has a built in coupon you can add along with the ability to write in notes for each item you order making this an easy go to spot for quick ordering ahead and paying online.
Other things to stay away from: -- General Tso Tofu - while it’s a great idea for vegans, it’s cut in huge chunks that are not very crispy and don't absorb the sauce well. -- The Jumbo Shrimp are big flat pancake shaped piles of mostly breading. -- We've had better Lumpia by far. -- Ordering extra crispy noodles can be a waste, they are often a bit stale as though they were prepacked too early. -- As is the case with most fast food Chinese places the Chicken, Pork & Beef are sub par meat and can be rubbery or fatty. --The (fake) Lobster is almost always overcooked/steamed and too mushy. -- If you don't like a lot of heavy sauce just about every traditional dish is lathered in Garlic Sauce. It's a tasty sauce, but you can get it on the side by ordering off the diet menu if it’s just too much for you. The heavy sauce can really drown out the freshness of the vegetables especially if you're ordering seafood you may want to consider ordering it steamed so they put the sauce on the side.
Things to try: Order the shrimp or scallops with vegetables and in the notes section ask them to make it Kung Pao style. While the Chicken Kung Pao isn't the greatest because the Chicken isn't great at any Chinese fast food place, the Shrimp and Scallops make a much tastier dish and this place makes it great.
Order the Mixed Vegetables and ask them for Zucchini, Carrots, and Mushrooms and write in the notes...
Read moreWe have been going here for probably 25 years...food is usually pretty good. Tonight I ordered food for a birthday party...ordered chicken pansit...they sent shrimp, tasted very fishy..I don't even like shrimp...they wanted me to bring back bc and switch it, they don't deliver...I was at my daughters birthday party. They would not credit me, or let me get the pansit when I am able to...said even if it was 2 weeks from now, I had to bring their mistake back...very very unproffessional, she knew that it was their error...if you make a mistake with someones dinner, correct it immediatly, right? My family will not be patronizing this business anymore. Sad that you have to go through your order before you leave to make sure it is correct, especially when their prices have sky rocketed :(
Update- Owner "Josh" reached out to me and told me it was a 3rd party that I talked to about my order that night...He said come in anytime and get a new pansit order :) I thought that night was unusual because they are usually pretty good about things!...
Read moreCalled in an order for pickup on 04/13/2023 at about 9:20pm. Just some wings and a house special egg foo young. The lady said it would be ready in about 15 minutes. I skate (I'm a skater) up there to pick it up at about 9:35pm and the guy at the counter says he doesn't have my order. I repeat my order, to confirm, and he verified that he doesn't have it. ok, now what do you want me to do? wait till it comes through? order again? starve? Thanks for NOTHING!
EDIT: The guy at the counter just called me and explained that they just received the order. I told him I spoke with a lady there, on-site who put in the order and gave me a time that it would be ready. After a few "hang on sir" responses, he told me they use an answering service for their calls. WOW, MAN! REALLY?? YOU just lost a 15 year customer, for LIFE! I'll NEVER be back!
EDIT to your response: first of all, I never used profanity towards your little brother. second, I don't appreciate you blowing up my phone. quit calling me or I'll sue you...
