What you receive for the amount spent is definitely 5 stars. I've had my fair share of Chinese take out. Gunston Wok is up at the top. I see some reviews giving this place a bad review based on a bad experience with a specific menu item. This seems unfair. I too have things I avoid here (I'm looking at you, curry dishes). I love Chinese curry, but the curry from here just tasted weird (would not buy again). It is normal for any food establishment to have a menu item you avoid. The few dishes that I frequently get are well made and competitively priced (beef with broccoli, lo mein, hunan shrimp, and a few others). The chef is skilled. Overcooked shrimp is leathery, undercooked tastes raw. The chef gets it right, every time. The taste never changes, so I know what to expect when I make an order. Today, I ordered sweet and sour pork combination platter and replaced the roll/soup option with wonton soup (costs slightly extra). The wonton broth is clear and not too greasy. The wonton dumpling in the soup uses thin dough (tastes better than other places that use thick dough). $11.50 total spend. Worth it. Have I had better Chinese food? Sure. But such places charge $25-$40 per dish. Gunston Wok is superior in...
Read moreWe have been going to Gunston Wok for a good portion of my life. We eat there regularly. It is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is so much better than other Chinese restaurants. I am regularly disappointed when we are out of the area and order food from another Chinese restaurant. They are nowhere near as good as Gunston Wok. It is very affordable. With inflation going crazy, other places have become way more expensive. We spend approximately $10 per person here. The pictures below show a $40 dollar meal. They are very large portions. We always have enough food leftover for another one or two lunches in the days following. All the leftovers microwave very well. The people at Gunston Wok know our orders so well that sometimes they are confused when we decide to switch it up some. 😂 If you are looking for a good, dependable restaurant, this is definitely the place to go. It's always one of the top places we eat at. 👍

Read moreWe've been adrift ever since moving back into the area and finding that Hunan Lorton had closed, but it looks like we've finally found a decent local Chinese food place that doesn't break the bank.
While we haven't yet sampled the entire menu, I feel like I can say that, while it's food is not "authentic Chinese" and isn't revolutionary, it's good, flavorful "American Chinese food". And that's fine! It's great, even, if that's what you're looking for. It's what we were looking for, and that's why I'm giving it 5 stars.
Oh, one thing: Many of the dishes allow you to select a level of spiciness. I played it safe and went with "medium" for our first order....they were definitely using a "Caucasian spiciness scale" (my husband: "Is this supposed to be spicy?" "...I think I can feel a little bit on my tongue..."), so adjust your expectations...
