Starbucks — Restaurant in Virginia

When asked what I wanted I gave my normal answer for the last 3 years, make something up. I never ask for anything specific with the hope for something interesting which at most Starbucks you will be met with a drink from the menu. This is fine but not really what I ask for because I want to see what they have come up with as a drink unique to them. This was not one of those times. The barista, which I unfortunately did not get her name, asked me only the follow up question of if I liked coffee to which I replied yes. The drink I was met with is what they call the undertow. When you look at it is seems basic with espresso, water, and sweetener. This is in fact part of the great secret to this drink in that the cold water and hot espresso are not mixed and one is floating upon the other. I usually refrain from leaving negative reviews, even when the service or attitude is not satisfactory. However, my experience at this location yesterday was truly disappointing. Firstly, the coffee quality was embarrassing, and I noticed a bad drainage smell on the cup lid, which was very off-putting. Additionally, when I asked the cashier to check my gift card balance, he told me that the card was not activated. His attitude came across as rude, and I felt as if he was being dishonest about the balance. I was confused at the time because I had received multiple $100 Starbucks gift cards and was unsure of the exact balance on each one. MY FAVORITE STARBUCKS IN THE DMV / D.C. AREA! Lots of outdoor seating, courteous & friendly staff - most especially Austin (he is a real ace!) Plenty of free parking and plus there are five (5) places to eat in the same small shopping center. Also great is that there is no drive-thru at this Starbucks, so the staff can really take care of the sit-down and pre-ordering / mobile order / APP customers. (The ones with drive throughs seem more tense and flurry of activity.) This makes for a more relaxed cafe environment.
