I'm gonna start off topic by stating that I first thought they name was joke on the "barking spider, sneezing duck" terms used to commonly describe a certain bodily function. It took me a long time to get over here with it being slightly deeper off the freeways than Rip Current, Dos Desperados, Iron Fist, Indian Joes, Aztec and almost as far off the path as Lost Abbey and Lattitude. With so many breweries it's really impossible to try them all and frequent the good one's. That is probably a full time job by itself.
You'll notice it's got the similar industrial center vibe as every brewery around, but their outdoor chairs and patio have this Boulder Colorado or Oregon vibe. You may have seen the wine barrel chairs at places like wineries and Stone's tasting rooms, but man do those feel out of place. They do belong in Temecula overlooking the vineyards, maybe with a bathtub and your spouse next to you, wait that's those damn Cialis commercials. Back on topic. The gravel path, the more rustic cut wooden chairs, thee firepits make me wish it got cold enough here to wear down jackets and beanies instead of sanuk's and tanks, so like I said Colorado or Oregon, perhaps Oregon because of the Beaver and the logo.
Dog friendly and more often than not they have a nitro beer on tap. They have become known for their milk stout which has a pleasing sweet aftertaste common to the style. It's chocolate milk for adults, they don't do growler fills of this, but I think cooking with this would be excellent. They have a seasonal rotating variation like the peanut butter and nitro versions. You'll notice breweries like Iron Fist do this with their velvet glove and coconut velvet glove variant. The milk is a great way for people to get into stouts, which then leads you into pales, and higher IBU ales then IPA's, red's and sours. It's the natural progression of things. Rye IPA I thought was lacking a certain earthy quality. I expected a more bold body and higher ABV. Dam Double IPA was a perfect example of a classic style. Well within all IPA protocol's with a good body, aftertaste. I would love to try and Double of this profile. The Saison was overly wheaty and floral for my liking, I could really taste the coriander. I end up getting a milk stout between other beer tries because it's good and not because I prefer the style over my usual high IBU/ABV IPA's. It's a very social setting here, similar to other places, but I could see them moving to a bigger location now that they have the tasting room in North Park, those hipsters love beer and a sweet beer is perfect for them. Just look at how the tasting room has our reviewed by the actual brewery which has been open much longer.
Staff is friendly, prices are good, they have a solid variety. They have the room for brewery tours, but they also tend to be understaffed on Saturdays. They could have better hours and a better food truck schedule. Overall I think they could sacrifice some of the sytles for more refined non seasonals. They certainly have sweets and spiced drinks on their palate. A brewery should really have a half dozen beers they've locked down all year and not have an almost fully rotating menu. 2-3 Ales, 1 or 2 IPA, Brown, Wiezen or a lager then the half dozen seasonal. I would love to have 2 versions of the year round beers and a seasonal to choose from.
It's a great place to come for beer and socializing due to that nice patio over other...
Read moreToday we had a terrible experience due to a bartender’s behavior. An individual in our family who just turned 21, had a temporary ID from the DMV (waiting for new ID to come in mail) and old ID, which the bartender verbally berated us about. We tried to clarify what the issue was and the bartender went off the deep end, saying it was CA law and that all other breweries that allowed it were wrong and that we would know nothing about it, a long winded rude response to a clarifying question. She began accusing us of ordering him a drink which we did not do. It took forever for her to pour our drinks and she continued the entire time to make rude comments about this same topic, it felt like an eternity. If our other family members hadn’t already ordered, we would have left. The whole interaction was just odd. We proceeded to go to 4 other breweries and every last one accepted the temporary ID. If that is the law, she could have just said that, but she took it upon herself to insult us. For example, at one point I interrupted her tirade to say, “it’s alright, not a big deal” and she responded condescendingly with, “well, you guys made it a big deal.” Maybe she was having a REALLY bad day. We used to love Belching Beaver but this really soured...
Read moreAh, the Original Famous Belching Beaver Brewery located in the famed North county of San Diego. Home of the Peanut Butter Milk Stout. Although this has to be one of my favorite beers (I'm a big stout fan), they are so, so much more than that.
About 2 years ago, my wife and I visited the Belching Beaver brewery and grill, but wasn't really impressed. This place? VERY IMPRESSED. The inside is GINORMOUS. The tables seemed to be made of nice lacquered wood. There are plenty of tables, bar seats 2 flat screens and a wall of vegetation. Who has a wall of vegetation in there warehouse? Food is served here as well. (We didn't get any food, but from the looks of it, we absolutely will the next go around!)
On to the beers! As I stated before, I'm a big fan of stouts, so naturally, I order a flight with the Peanut Butter Stout, Mexican Chocolate Peanut Butter Milk Stout (another personal fave) and a couple of imperial stouts and IPA's that I forget about. I was not disappointed with any beer. My wife is partial to IPA's and loves the Deftones. Voila, a Deftones collabo beer with Belching Beaver.
Don't miss out on this place. Next time WE WILL eat...
