Trujillo’s Comedor Y Cantina – A Restaurant Stuck in Time
Walking into Trujillo’s Comedor Y Cantina off LaSalle, it’s clear this place has been around a long time. The clientele skews older, the decor feels frozen in time, and the entire operation seems to run on habit rather than intention. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a nostalgic restaurant, but when maintenance, cleanliness, and service start slipping, it becomes a problem.
Ambiance & Cleanliness: Neglect is Showing
The restaurant has an aged, worn-down feel. Ceiling tiles are missing, vents are dusty, and overall upkeep seems nonexistent. The most concerning issue? Cleanliness. A busser rolled a cart of dirty dishes right behind me while I was eating. Another staff member delivered fresh chips using a cart that still had old food remnants on it. It was impossible to ignore.
Service: No Structure, No Attention to Detail
The service at Trujillo’s is disjointed and chaotic. Multiple staff members handled different parts of my order, but no one seemed responsible for my table. A hostess sat me, a different person brought chips and salsa (after about two minutes), another server took my drink order, and yet another took my food order. Who was actually my waiter? No clue.
When my tacos finally arrived, my chips and salsa were long gone. A server asked if I wanted more, then reached over me to refill the same salsa dish instead of bringing a fresh one. The chips didn’t arrive for another 5–10 minutes, by which time I was already done eating.
Trying to check out was another headache. Instead of handling payments at the table, Trujillo’s forces customers to pay at the front counter, creating a bottleneck. Worse, the staff up front seemed more interested in gossiping than managing the checkout process efficiently.
The Food: Taco Tuesday Isn’t Enough
For $6.99, I got a two-taco plate with rice and beans. It’s a solid price, but you get what you pay for. The tacos were uninspired—basic ground beef, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The rice and beans? Textbook mediocre. Nothing offensive, nothing memorable.
For $10 total (with a drink), it wasn’t overpriced, but with so many better Tex-Mex spots in Waco, I wouldn’t return.
The Menu: Too Much of Everything
Trujillo’s menu tries to do too much. It’s a six-page sprawl of options, which often leads to inconsistency in execution. A smaller, more focused menu could improve food quality and efficiency.
Final Verdict: A Restaurant Running on Nostalgia
Trujillo’s isn’t terrible, but it’s far from great. It survives on routine, not reinvention. The food is passable, the service is a mess, and the cleanliness is questionable. Regulars may love it, but for anyone looking for a high-quality, well-run Tex-Mex experience, Waco has far better options.
Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5) – Generous, but deserved for longevity,...
Read moretruly disappointed and upset of my experience countless times of visiting this place…
Jose whom is well known to everyone of the warm greetings and pure generosity … however that was never the case in my experience with the interactions with him. again , i am a loyal customer , i come nearly everyday but never once felt welcomed by Jose himself
he always got my order wrong and when explaining to him what i get every single time ; he turns his back on me rushing to run away , a paying customer with leaving over beyond tips .
when kindly telling him with a smile , something was wrong about my food as he’s proceeding to walk towards me , it’s beings with a back and forward of his own miscommunication .
today when visiting (for the last time) Jose aggressively pushed a chair against my table as he’s serving a big group of working members , i become shocked and look at him , i receive such a look of disgusted look from him .
i respectfully asked for my ticket ready to leave , after ordering 2 meals for my family to go .
when leaving , a server acknowledges i was the one he continues messing the order upon , jose himself , throws his hand in the air saying something he misheard from me (again , when i get the same exact thing through the 50 times i visited this place.)
i was very upset about this interaction after developing such a kind and opening relationship with all the servers there , however when you feel unwelcome by Jose , someone who has been there longer then anyone else , i do not see a reason to return.
love this place , but did not love my...
Read moreI got two drinks to go (staying at hotel next door), queso and a higher end drink around $24. Go back for 2 more $2.50 drinks. Comes out to $24, I’m like hold on now these drinks (even on a chalk board in front of me says wed $2.50 each. I say what’s going on? The owner steps in and says ohhh if you get it to go they are 9 each. I explain I was here earlier today got two drinks to go and it was only five dollars for the two drinks they say that the bartender is new and she was mistaken. They re-ring me up for $8.31 (in Texas you have to get a food order in order to get to go drinks, so I got a queso and the two drinks and then look at the receipt and it says chili con queso and a pint of hot sauce which was $3.45 on top of the queso. I explain I did not order hot sauce. She then replies oh I rung that up wrong, “chips are the same cost as the queso???, at this point I’m getting the impression they’re trying to ring me up for more things than what I’m ordering. So I speak to the owner. She tells me that apparently I’ve had too much to drink (had 3 drinks in 4 hours) and it’s my fault that I’m upset. I then explain you have now quadruple charged me and then to fix it double charge me, they never truly apologize and blame me for trying to charge me for way more. And I crazy! Or would you have...
