This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Walla Walla and nearly every time I go home we try to get to the Modern. 2/21/18 is the day I decided it would be the last visit. Had we used the restroom before eating, we would have left.l immediately. It was horribly dirty and appeared to have been ignored for weeks, perhaps months. Cannot begin to think of the kitchen cleanlinesd. Still makes want to wretch. I had to return the pineapple chicken (or great blobs of breading would be a better name) since there were shrimp that had made it unto the chicken. Huge portion and when the food was replaced it was undercooked and no longer appetizing at all. The plates were melmac and felt like they had been in a freezer. The food was cold almost immediately. Silverware was cheap and had scratchy edges. It felt like we were getting what was left in the refrigerator so they could sell and shut down. This was incredibly sad as this used to be one of the very best places for great Chinese Food. The only reason this was give 2 stars is because the server was very pleasant and professional. If another restaurant is hiring, offer a job to this woman! She was great. But that is all that was good about...
Read moreExcellent food, service, and atmosphere. A+ all around! The best Chinese food I've eaten in years, and you can tell everything was made from scratch right there. The chef must be commended! The egg rolls were just like we used to make... they are definitely NOT the frozen kind that most Chinese restaurants seem to serve. Even the barbecue pork was very tender and moist; and the egg drop soup was deliciously flavorful, not bland like so many other places. I ordered General Tso's chicken and the meat was so tender it practically melted in my mouth! The deep fried batter was nice and crispy. Nothing at all like the tough, chewy, battered and fried meats at most other Chinese restaurants. Portions were huge and actually provided me with 2 extra meals from leftovers. Sadly, however, re-warmed chicken and pork weren't very good and reminded me of what you get at other places or in the freezer section at the grocery store. The fried rice was still really good rewarmed. Next time, we'll probably just split one plate between the two of us and order extra egg rolls and fried rice! Prices are very reasonable. This is THE place to go for quality...
Read moreToday was my wife and I's 13 year wedding anniversary. I thought I would order dinner so we didn't have to cook and could just hang out. The last time I ate food here was about 10 years ago and it was so awful, I said I'd never try it again. Thought I would give it a shot after I heard they changed owners. BIG MISTAKE! The food is definitely quantity over quality. All of the food tastes the same - whether it's chicken, pork or beef. If you order something crispy, be ready for it to be super soggy. I had worked a hard 10 hour day today and if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have been able to eat any of it. SO TERRIBLE. I don't understand how this restaurant has some of the reviews it does, I'm shocked they are still in business. Now I'm dreading the left overs! Can't feed it to the dogs and too expensive to throw it out. No joke, the WORST Chinese food I've ever had or probably will have, in my entire life. DON'T ORDER FROM HERE AND EXPECT IT TO BE ANYTHING GOOD!...
