I had occasion to come to Wallington for a badly needed a car repair and with hours to pass I thought I'd stop in for lunch at the SMYRNA GYRO restaurant. I had driven by on my way to drop off my vehicle at the shop down the road a bit; so I walked over and waited till they opened after popping into the Polish food market across the way.
I was starving and thought because it was Monday they might be closed but I called and was so graciously told I could expect them to open in a half hour for lunch. I'm so glad I didn't leave! The freshness, portion size and quality of the ingredients was amazing. So are the prices!
I had the extra-meat lamb/beef platter which comes with a huge greek salad with delicious tomatoes, cucumbers, beautiful sliced and chopped onion, feta, oil/vinegar dressing and seasoning; fresh cut fried potatoes; a huge heaping scoop of hummus, and of course the best-tasting tzatziki sauce. The meat was nice sized sliced and in abundance! The mint lemonade is so perfect- honemade.. not overly sweet - fresh squeezed, cold and thirst- quenching zesty- I had two!
This is definitely worth the extra time and effort to get here and spend a lovely afternoon at the quaint tables with umbrellas outside enjoying the sunshine and Company of the most Charming owners.
I'm a really big eater- especially since I eat my main meal before 2pm and lightly around dinnertime. I always expect disappointment from gyro places- the meat strips are always so thin and tasteless, and you get so little it's totally unsatisfying. NOT HERE THANK GOD!
I couldn't practically finish everything on my plate- we'll come back again and again to try some of the other items on the menu.
No doubt I'll come out of my way to spend another relaxing afternoon even if I have to drive a half hour to get here again and again. What a rare gem in a Charming little town. Xeraitai...
Read moreTried Smyrna out for the first time, after driving past it a couple of times. Called for a pickup order at around 7 PM on a Saturday. I ordered two Beef and Lamb Gyro XL Platters (beef and lamb gyro (double meat), rice, pita, salad, french fries, hummus, tzatziki and the Beef and Lamb Gyro Pita (beef and lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion, french fries, tzatziki). I really, really wanted to like this place. They give generous portions and the food is very fairly priced. And it actually tasted pretty good. Until I found a hair in one of my last bites of pita. I understand this happens but it is just such a turn off and pet peeve of mine. Up until then, I was enjoying my pita. It had lots of meat, and even had French fries inside (what a nice touch!). But it is very oily so it's a cheat meal. Any lettuce that was inside the pita had soaked up all the oil into a soggy mess. Also brings me to my next point - best to eat it immediately because the sauce and oil does make the pita soggy. However, I would not recommend dining in because they do not have AC - even on a 90 degree day. That did make me wonder about the food safety in such high temperatures. There's also a credit card fee, so keep that in mind.
I'm not sure if I'll be back because of the hair. The food was good but not so good that I couldn't find a hairless version of it...
Read moreWent here yesterday with my boyfriend for the first time. We live in wallington just a few blocks away and always pass it and say we will go but had always forgotten it. We will never forget this place again. We’ve also read great reviews on Facebook about this place. When we walked in it immediately smelled amazing. We were greeted right away and told to take a seat and someone would be over to help us. I ordered the gyro special with fries and a salad. My boyfriend got the special with the lamb, beef, rice and salad. You can tell how fresh everything is. The tzatziki sauce was so delicious. I’m not one to eat all my food in one sitting but I did (usually I take it in a doggy bag.) we were even given free glasses of homemade lemonade. It was perfect. It wasn’t overly sweet or too tart. at the end the waitress even convinced us to get the baklava with ice cream and oh my god was it delicious. My boyfriend had never had it before and loved it. He’s not a sweat or dessert person but he kept raving about the baklava.
The waitress was so sweet and friendly while we were there. We made conversation with her and you could tell she wanted to make sure we were happy.
The place itself is cozy and quiet which is nice. we will certainly be going...
