As a Greek, born and raised in Greece, I don't want to give Greek restaurants a bad review. I really want them to do good, to prosper, to spread the culture through food even. At the same times I have to be honest with the tastes I grew up with, and try and be fair in my judgment. We went there, not too long ago, and we were a large group. We sat in the back. The restaurant has an amazing atmosphere and decor. It's a very nice place inside. The coctails were excellent, and they have an awesome margarita on their list. Good beer selection as well. Now the food. It's all about the food, and what feels authentic to me. If there is something that has always worked, don't change it, as the change is not necessarily better. Again, this is my taste only, and observation and conversation with others. Now back to changing things, and saganaki. The saganaki on its own has an excellent taste, it is simply awesome. But it comes with a strawberry tomato jam. Why? Lose it please, and you will save money on something truly unnecessary. The loukaniko, is a great dish. The kolokithakia were thin and fluffy, and very good. The midia were very tasty. The octapodi appetizer needs help. I did not like it much. I grew up on it, and this fell short. Also, why is there a pea puree in it? Maybe in some part of Greece they do that, but not where I come from. The kalamarakia were very good. I have mixed feelings about the dish called gavros marinatos. It seemed to me that it fell short of what was intended to do. Excellent tyrokafteri, and very good tzatziki. I don't think I had the melitzanosalata. The giouvetsi thalassinon was not my thing. I just don’t like seafood mixed with pasta, rice, or potatoes. The poikilia kreaton was good, but because of the loukaniko, and the very tasty chicken in it. The kontosouvli, seemed and was, a large pork souvlaki. I think it needed a little help, but it wasn't bad. The horta that day were not to my liking. Others found them okay. To me, they were just lacking that day. The Greek fries that come with some dishes or on their own, simply the best I would go back, and be more selective. Only because it's a very nice place, and the...
Read moreWhat an AWESOME experience in Walpole! It's so HARD to find excellent sit-down Greek in the south shore and man did Kosmos absolutely nail it.
A lovely, warm, charming atmosphere with authentic Greek music, friendly faces and sleek modern Greek decor. The space is on the more intimate side and that's OK! It wasn't tiny, just not enormous either.
But... the food. Oh. My. Goodness. Just wonderful! As a man of Greek heritage I can tell you Yiaya would be proud. My husband and I dined on exceptional dishes that were shared. All appetizers (which are GREAT shared). The menu is about 50% apps and 50% main courses with several desserts at the end. The quality of the ingredients was very noticeable.
The fried calamari was tender, juicy and crispy all at once. The batter to meat ratio was perfect and accompanying sauce was delightful.
The spanikopita was unusual in preparation - yet outstanding in flavor & texture. A large square with minimal phyllo and generous filling of spinach, feta and even a touch of mint - perfection.
The dipping platter, consisting of tzatziki, spicy feta dip and an out of this world beet & tahini dip accompanied by delicious warm pita was a real standout.
The "Greek dumplings" were arguably the most odd of the dishes - but the flavors were an absolute knockout. Presented in a black truffle sauce these dumplings were filled with a delicious blend of meat, sauce and wonderful ingredients - they tasted like the best Pasticio sauce (notes of lamb, beef, tomato, cinnamon, thyme) all just worked so well.
The grilled octopothia (octopus) was EXCEPTIONAL. Perfectly grilled & seasoned served over a bed of green pea puree with crispy capers and red onions. To die for delicious.
We didn't have room for dessert but man we wish we did. Such great service, food and atmosphere. Kosmos is a gem in Walpole and a very welcome addition to the local culinary scene. We WILL be back soon!
EDIT: We went back and it was just as excellent the second time. Partner had the sea-bass and I had the lamb chops. SO DELICIOUS! Also we got the spanikorizo and village salad for apps and both were stellar. Highly...
Read moreThis past Saturday while watching Phantom Gourmet, this restaurant caught my eye and we decided to give it a try that night. Another couple and ourselves made a reservation for inside. Upon arrival, we were greeted by some very friendly, courteous staff, and I believe the owner. I let her know we was here because I saw them on Phantom earlier that day and she wanted us to give our review to her after we were done eating. The atmosphere was pretty and inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The entire staff were very polite, attentive and helpful with helping me order what I saw on Phantom. As a group, we decided to try a medley of dishes and share. Myself and my friend ordered a Cosmo and the men got Greek beer. We tried the fried zucchini chips with homemade tzatziki, the fried feta with honey, and the authentic Greek salad for our appetizer’s. For our main meal, we shared the medley of different meats, like sausage, chicken, lamb, beef, etc., which came with fries and tzatziki. For dessert, we got the fried baklava with custard and chocolate. Every single thing we tried was exceptional. The portions were very large, and even though the menu stated some items would serve 2 people, it fed all 4 of us. We as a group just returned from a trip to Italy and Greece and the food in this restaurant far exceeded everything there. I cannot stop raving about how delicious everything tasted to my friends and family. I did find the owner at the end of our meal, on our way out, and told her how wonderful our experience was and that we would definitely be back. She told us everything from spices to food is imported from Greece. You can really tell the difference. She was so gracious and thanked us for our review. She sent us home with a couple of pieces of rolled baklava, which I ate two days later and again it was superb! I am telling everyone I know about this wonderful restaurant and can’t wait to return and try something different....
