Well that was somewhat disappointing. I have tried MeAkan 2 or 3 times previously but it had been a while, prior to the pandemic. For some reason I had a desire to go today after church. The entrance is fairly welcoming and the main area was well lit, the porch area was a little darker partly due to windows being covered and dark colored booths. Our server was fairly prompt not to be unexpected since the restaurant had just opened for the day and she was pleasant and welcoming. She took our orders from the clear uncomplicated menu. The menu was easy to ready and simple in its design with clear expectation of what was being offered. Being a Sunday they were offering brunch menu. The difference between the regular lunch and brunch was an additonal $2 charge but you got 2 grilled shrimp as a consolation. The shrimp were cooked well and were fairly tasty and may have actually been a highlight of the meal. They were just haphazardly thrown/placed alongside on top the hibachi vegetables. So Brunch came with a house salad consisting of chopped lettuce drowning in nondescript dressing. This was quite possibly the worst part of the meal. In addition to the salad was a soup that was at best a marginal step above the quality of the salad. A fairly tasteless swill made with a very light broth reminiscent of a reused teabag on it fourth cup. I had ordered hibachi scallops, served with vegetables and rice. The vegetable portion was fairly generous and well cooked and reasonable flavor. This was probably the highlight of the meal. The fried rice was tolerable also lacking in flavor. not the best flavor or texture but a good portion size. The scallops were disappointing. they looked reasonably well cooked but lacked taste for some reason. There were also only 3 scallops. They were a good sized scallop but felt a little let down and overpriced. Maybe if everything had better flavor it may have been different. I also added 2 pieces of california roll. which were also diasppointing taste wise. they looked well rolled but just seemed washed out. Yum yum sauce was also offered after the meal had arrived and the waitress had an after thought. She might has well have forgotten about it as it too was lacking in flavor. More like watered down mayonnaise and missing ingredients, texture, and flavor. All together a disappointing experience. The restaurant would not be on the top of my list of recommended restaurants as there are many in town that offer a more flavorful experience. The $18.50 was more expensive than some other is town that offer more flavorful fare. The 3 scallops were a disappointing quantity even for good...
Read moreJust got back home from eating at this place and I have mixed feelings about it. First off, they did a phenomenal renovation of the old Ryans restaurant! High quality materials, perfect lighting, and comfortable temperature. Even the menu had an expensive look and feel. Our server was Haley and she was very sweet and accomodating. I ordered the Meakan special(F5) which was steak, chicken, and shrimp served on a bowl of fried rice. My friend ordered the Yaki Udon chicken and a cheese dumpling appetizer(they should be named crab rangoon). I thought the cheese dumplings were awesome but my friend didnt care for them too much because they had a strong crab taste. When his meal came, he immediately noticed it was served with mushrooms(which was NOT listed on the meal description) and sent it back to be remade. My food was pretty bland unfortunately. We deliberately sat at a booth because hibachi food tastes like rice, meat, and soy sauce(something I could easily make at home) Well my Meakan special tasted EXACTLY like that. Steak tasted like it had no seasoning on it whatsoever. My friend got his food and said it was okay. The meals included a small ginger salad and a REALLY tasty clear house soup(beef flavor with mushroom and little crunchy bits in it). Since my friend doesnt like mushrooms, I gladly took his bowl! The nice environment, great waitress, delicious soup and appetizer is what kept me from giving this a worse review. While the main course was disappointing, I WILL go back to try their sushi since they had a HUGE sushi menu and the prices werent too bad on those items. All in all, I recommend you try them out. P.S.-a note for the management. PLEASE don't play country music in a Japanese steakhouse. No one wants to hear a song about "knockin boots" in any restaurant, let alone...
Read moreBest hibachi I've had this year, and that's saying a lot as I travel nearly year-round round for work and hibachi is my favorite food.
Fried rice was perfect, teriyaki sauce above average, filet mignon was an actual tenderloin cut. Chef listened to us and cooked the meat precisely as ordered. He also didn't insist on doing the entire show when we told him not to worry about it - we were the only ones at the table and eat hibachi so often we sometimes prefer just to get the food. He obliged, although he would have been willing and capable if a larger group had been at the table.
Everyone was very friendly, attentive and capable. My only complaint if I'm looking for negatives is that it was close to closing and the cleaning going on around me was a little ridiculous. They're lucky we're pretty laud back and only came for the food, because if we were on a date or with family I could see people getting pretty upset. Not only did they clean the grill while we were still eating (which is a pet peeve of mine), but they mopped the floor UNDER my feet and chair, getting my feet wet. Workers were bustling around cleaning, bumping into me, getting me wet, etc WHILE I was still eating. And it's not as if I'm a slow eater, this was going on before the food even hit my plate with 30 minutes before the official close time.
But I digress, Im able to overlook this because everything else was top notch, and Id like to believe this was just a unfortunate rare occurrence.
Overall I highly recommend for the food, and if the atmosphere improves next time,...
