Please allow me to preface this with that I am not avid reviewer. I have worked in the service industry for over a decade in both front of house and back of house and held managerial positions in the likeness as well. I feel professionally inclined to make mention of our experience with the utmost respect to the establishment.
My fiance and I truly wanted to enjoy Rhody Roots, for it was a cozy atmosphere with an inviting menu of seemingly well orchestrated dishes, but unfortunately our experience was less than desirable. While the dishes were beautifully presented and delectable, the service was incredibly peculiar.
After a 10 hour line cook shift, I wanted to have something new but familiar. My fiance and I thought, "Why not try Rhody Roots?" We were greeted and seated promptly, albeit the table was wobbly and frigid due to its close proximity to the window. Of course, these were easy to fix; table wedges and keeping some layers on did the trick. After placing and receiving our drink orders, our server reviewed the specials with us and we immediately placed our order. Needless to say, she was very prompt and lovely. We ordered a few things to share and decided to keep 1 menu for good measure, in case we wanted to try more.
Our food arrives and they are engulfing the itty bitty table; my fiance and I do our best to spacially sort the items to the point that we placed our drinks on the cold window ledge beside us. The dishes continued to be placed despite how disorganized the table is and it became overwhelming. At one point I accidentally dropped a utensil and was asked if I needed a new knife, which I replied no, but nothing else was done to remove the soiled one.
We began eating and enjoyed just about everything; the crispy pork belly, the unrooted salad, and sticky ribs tasted superbly. We were checked up, which was very reassuring. Soon after that my fiance went to eat a rib and the bone splintered in his mouth, leaving a perpetual scratchiness and discomfort in his throat. Unfortunately it ruined his appetite, brought us concern, and compelled me to eat more of the food. He bounced between the bathroom a couple of times to gurgle it out but no dice. At this point we had essentially ran out of water at the table and a large table was just sat; it had become busier.
We were consolidating space on the table due to how tiny it was (stacking a couple plates so that I can comfortably finish other food,) when we were checked on again but asked if needed anything to go. With a mouth full of food, my fiance responded on both of our behalf that we were still eating but may need one box for later. I also remarked afterward that we are indeed still eating; a to go box was brought to us but placed on the novelty fireplace beside us for when were finished eating, nothing more. Needless to say, it made us feel rushed- no inquiry about needing more water or another drink was mentioned while we were literally still indulging.
After we realized that we have essentially been closed out, we began stacking our plates and utensils for our server to carry. After clearing, she returns and asks the unusual open ended question, "You guys are all set, right? You don't need anything else?" From which we reluctantly replied, yes. Mind you, we had been at the restaurant for a total time of 30 minutes- upon entry and departure.
What it boils down to is that please do not ask to bag or take food away from a customer while they are mid bite and evidently still dining. It makes them feel rushed and uncomfortable. Additionally, if I may politely suggest, please bring water to refill at tables if you are going to frequently check in on them or at least be observant enough to offer the guest another drink; our glasses were nearly empty.
I do applaud our server for her tentativeness regarding my lethal shellfish allergy; she was able to have the kitchen accomadate our food so that both my fiance and I could...
Read moreAMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!! I walked into this place and wasn't sure what to make of it. I value the modest interior design and the execution of the food is a whole other universe. The menu is very diverse and you can easily spend the entire day eating here given the breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices. We were greeted kindly by the fantastic staff, who value people as if we were their family. They also treated each other as a family, which was fantastic.
We started with a very good sushi roll. We had a fish sandwich that was great with the greens. The dressing on the greens complimented the coleslaw in the sandwich. The hand-cut fries looked oh-so-tempting, but I'll leave those who can get away with a heaping pile of deliciousness.
We also had the Arctic Char dish that was executed as if we were in a Michelin-star restaurant. I still dream of this dish. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!
We decided to try the fried rice pudding. Most restaurants have poor desserts, but NOT RHODY ROOTS. THEIR FRIED RICE PUDDING IS AWESOME. It's sweetened and delicious rice that is rolled into balls and then covered in crushed cornflakes and then.......wait for it.......deep fried. A dessert take on arancini that then sits on Nutella and powdered sugar.
I was extremely impressed. I imagine the Chefs are JWU grade, for anyone from JWU is amazing! No stone was left unturned.

Read moreWe have been wanting to try out Rhody Roots for ages and finally made it a priority to stop in. Lordy - this unassuming place was full of all of the quirks and unique touches that I have started craving in any local experience. The restaurant has an open view of the chef’s kitchen, an open concept that feels familiar, and eclectic artwork. We even noticed board games in the window bench seats that we intend to explore next time we stop in. First step in and we knew the food would be delicious, the air smells savory, we couldn’t wait to order. The menu is diverse but not overwhelming, accommodating to allergies and dietary restrictions, and does not limit options to time of day. We ordered the chicken sandwich and a rainbow roll. The fries are to die for, and after making the rounds to check out French fries all over the region we can comfortably say Rhody Roots knows about the potato. The sandwich was a masterpiece and very generously portioned. The Rainbow Roll was everything you want in this classic roll, perfectly portioned, fresh and left me satisfied and eager to come back for the rest of that sushi menu! Rhody Roots was the perfect lunch date, can’t wait to go back for brunch, dinner,...
