We were in town for an overnight family getaway and found this place on Google Reviews. The well above average ratings and reviews of 4 plus stars are indeed well earned by this establishment.
Don't let the neighboring shuttered businesses and consistently closed establishments around this spot sway you elsewhere. The unassuming building that houses this prohibition era establishment hides some incredible food, amazing sports memorabilia, and a waitress named April who this family felt as if we knew forever by the time we finished dining here.
We ordered the Deluxe Deep Dish pizza (family of 4 here). We opted for the large. April let us know that this pizza would take 45 minutes at least to bake. We were fine with that wait. April suggested we order small side salads which we did (get the vinegar based feta dressing - you will not regret that). We also ordered mozzarella sticks for our two teenage kids. April offered us some freshly made bread which was warm when she served it and she even brought us a nice sized bowl of their sauce with 2 meatballs that "must've fallen in there".
The sauce....this is the stuff of Grandma kitchen MAGIC. Soooo genuinely amazing that I decreed this place to be worth the 2 plus hour drive from our house I'm PA to come get again ANYTIME!
But wait, those meatballs - well once again - truly INCREDIBLE! After tasting them - we wished we would've opted for the meatball deep dish instead of the deluxe we ordered!
The mozzarella sticks were fantastic as well!
While waiting for our pizza, I found myself looking around at all the sports memorabilia on the walls. This place has some autographs that should be in a museum! Have Ruth, Jim Brown, Jack Lambert, and sooo many others! Pennants of world series from the 50's....Dino must've been a really well liked guy because he had MANY personalized autographs to him on these walls!
April came with our pizza and once again - she amazed us with her ability to artfully manage that huge pie in one hand and still bring plates and goods in her other hand to our table!
She sliced and served the first slices of our pie to us, explaining that she placed a plate upside down underneath the pie tray to "hold in the goods" of what remained on the tray.
She also brought us another side of that Heavenly sauce for us to enjoy with our pie!
This pizza was unlike any deep dish pizza I've ever had! The dough was irresistibly perfectly done! Not too chewy yet not too hard and crusty! Perfect! The contents of this pie were amazing as well! A feast in every bite and a work of OMG AMAZING IN EVERY SLICE!
We left with leftovers, and a nice sized to go container of that Heavenly sauce!
I am not over stating one BIT of how great this place is! Do yourself a favor and get to this hidden mecca of incredible food and ask for April! I know we...
Read moreWow! I felt right at home here! Lots of people dispersed over three room and a bar, but the design of this very old restaurant doesn't make one feel crowded. The food is excellent and portions are large. The menu offers a multitude of choices.
The decor is on the dark and cozy side, and the floor is black and white checkered. Service is good, even though a sign advertised "help needed." Everyone was friendly and courteous.
The entry is into a divided bar area, upbeat music playing, and seven TV over the bar. The bar stools are vinyl covered chrome and stainless steel pedestals, and the bar is old wood.
Adjoining, behind the bar, is an old-fashioned lounge, while on the opposite side is a whole other dining room. Only two booths were open in the whole place.
We ordered the calamari app, and received a huge portion drowned in a sweet sauce. It was delightful, but next time I'll be asking for sauce on the side. The sauce tasted of honey and sweet peppers, and far more to my taste than marinara.
Our entrees were rigatoni vodka sauce with chicken. It was probably the best I've ever tasted: lots of chicken and lots of flavor, and pasta al dente. I could only eat a bit as I was already full from 1/3 the calamari and one slice of bread with leftover sauce for a spread.
Oh yeah, they put a basket of bread on all tables for entree orders. Imagine. And the bread is so good it's sold in loaves separately.
My partner got the chicken parm and was not disappointed. The sauce stuck to the pasta, with no puddles forming in the bottom of the bowl, and the amount of cheese was just right. Again, at least half went home.
Many, many customers get their pizza from Sunrise, here or to-go. It looked as good as all the other foods served that I could see.
This restaurant is a blast from the past, but the type of place that is genuine. It's not a chain, it's a destination. We live an hour a way, and I can't...
Read moreSunrise inn is not sunrise anymore like it used to be. Every time when I order their pizza they don’t cook it all the way through. Or something they don’t do something right because the dough with the sauce on top of it it’s just it feels like it’s not cooked enough and it’s so doughy. and now this happened a couple times that I had to take my pizza back to ask for more Romano cheese on top of the pizza because they don’t put enough on like they used to. It doesn’t look like sunrise. The last time I ordered a large pepperoni pizza. Me and my son went to the car and we looked at the large pizza. There was hardly know Ramona cheese on it at all so I took it back so they can put more Romano cheese on it and this guy that worked there he was like looking mean at me and said next time if you want extra Romano ask because it’s not free well then put enough Romano cheese on it then like you guys used to put enough Romano cheese on it then because it does not look like sunrise pizza. I will never order from there again, but we ordered a single order of wings and they were good. I was surprised because usually when we order wings the outer part of the wing they don’t cook through enough, but they did this time the skin that’s what I’m talking about but I might order wings there again, but I will not order pizza there never, it’s really disappointing to me and I heard from other people about saying the same thing sunrise used to be the best pizza in town of any other pizza place but now it’s been no good for a long time and I’m tired of it. I’m not gonna order pizza there no more and I’m gonna tell everybody else that I know that better be careful what you order and what you get. IT’S NOT SUNRISE ANYMORE….. I rather go to Pizza Hut before I go to sunrise. I’m done with sunrise. I guess you have to give it a one star but I would give it a zero star that’s how bad and...
