Been coming here almost every Sunday for the last few months for a coffee and bagel, and there's a reason I keep coming back. The owner and staff are so passionate about this place and it shows. The bagels are bullfrog bagels, which are solid, but the true treasure is the lox. They prepare the lox chopped up fine (which gives it a lovely texture) and and the sandwich comes with cream cheese, dill, very elegantly sliced red onion, and, very importantly, not too many capers. The drip coffee is great and the espresso is solid as well, with many types of alternative milks (my go to is oat milk). The ambiance is also wonderful. Many plants, including fresh basil growing in the window booth. The owner's own artwork is on the walls and he will happily chat with you about it. I've seen his sister and his uncle come in a few times, which is very sweet. He also truly cares about the neighborhood and treats everyone with respect. A...

Do not go here!! This was one of the most infuriating experiences I’ve ever had at a coffee shop. We got there at 3:50p and they closed at 5p. To start, the woman behind the counter was very cold when taking our order. She told us the outside seating closed at 4:30p so we decided to sit inside. At 4:40p she told us to give her our dirty dishes because she was closing down the sink. Like okay ??? Mind you, our food was still being eaten off the plates. Then at 4:50p (as we were wrapping up our stuff) she started picking our trash up off the table. We had 10 minutes before they closed!!! I’ve worked in the food industry and never once acted in this way- if the store closed at 10p, I waited until 10:10p at the EARLIEST to remind guests that we were closing. Never would I have made guests feel like they had to leave 20 minutes BEFORE the store even closed! I will never be giving them my...

My husband and I came across this adorable coffee shop while walking U St two weeks back and decided to pop in to give it a try. We had the Andre 3000 breakfast bagel b/c they were able to adopt it to accommodate our vegan palate. That bagel sandwich was so yummy! I also enjoyed a flavorful cup of coffee and my husband (really) enjoyed the beet, carrot, and ginger fresh juice with his. Everything tasted awesomely fresh and delicious, and the service was outstanding! We returned the next week and enjoyed a slice of maple-pecan and blueberry cakes which were equally as scrumptious! We'll be returning again this week in hopes of getting another Andre 3000, so we're heading there a little earlier so we won't miss out; their bagels are made fresh daily so they could run out if we mosey in too late. As you can tell, stopping into Cafe U has now become part of our regular Saturday...

This café became part of my morning routine during a week-long stay in Washington for an international conference. I was extremely impressed by the atmosphere, quality, and vibe after initially stumbling in for a quick coffee early in the morning on my way to the conference. I ended up returning every morning for several days and met different employees each time. The staff were attentive, interesting, and personable. It was a pleasure speaking with them while savoring their excellent coffee and bagel sandwiches. Furthermore, I loved the “chill” vibe of this place – especially during a time of division and tension across the country. I strongly recommend stopping by this café whether you’re a local or tourist.

Had a fantastic breakfast at Café U! I ordered the Humpty Hump breakfast bagel sandwich and an Americano—both were excellent. The bagel was fresh, the fillings were delicious, and the coffee was just right. Service was incredibly fast, and the staff were super friendly. The best part? I got to bring my dog inside, which made the experience even better. A great spot with a welcoming atmosphere—I’ll definitely be back!

Uber cozy cafe!! I love the social ethos of the owner (who is the nephew of the owner of the Saloon (another AMAZING establishment with a social ethos)). The coffee is great (handcrafted, not rushed) and the treats are tempting. I wish we had more establishments like these instead of the land and expand, quick buck, neoliberal ethos of the cafes in DC!! (I can dream can’t I?? C’est la vie).
