I’ve been volunteering with Capital Area Food Bank since the beginning of this year and my experience has been nothing short of amazing. The food bank offers different ways to serve, consisting of 2-3 hour shifts to pack senior boxes, senior bags, and hunger relief boxes to help address the ongoing food insecurity in the DMV area. The Saturday community markets have also been a joy to be a part of, helping provide fresh meats and produce to locals. CAFB offers so many opportunities for their volunteers to make a meaningful difference in the community.

All the staff, from the front-desk to the volunteer supervisors, are friendly and supportive. Our supervisor, Rich Pearson goes above and beyond. He organizes the shifts efficiently making sure each volunteer has a role and has a safe and enjoyable time serving with CAFB. On one shift, Rich led a team of 20 volunteers to prepare 348 senior boxes and 682 senior bags. He fosters teamwork and never fails to remind volunteers of the meaningful impact they’re making - truly an asset to the CAFB team. Thank you for continuing to organize a wonderful experience. Will continue to come...

Have you heard the phrase, “ beggars can’t be choosy “? Okay, good. While the Capital Area Food Bank feeds so many hungry individuals in our nation; let me share a thought with you. One of my senior neighbor went to a free food distribution event. He received at least ten plus bags of food. Amongst the food were 4 types of bread, one cabbage, 4 red potatoes, white onions, goat cheese, chocolate milk, silk milk, 1 bag of corn flakes, 4 frozen meats(beef and pork ) only, dozen eggs, pack of unsalted butter, 1 fudge brownee, 2 bags of salad, 2 packs of processed chicken meat, 8 carrots, 4 tangelos, 1 coconut milk yogurt, 4 sparkling waters, 1 almond milk latte, 1 bag of white rice, and 1 bag of noodles!!! Thank you Capital Area Food Bank , but the recipient is slightly vegan! Since volunteers are picking and packing these grocery bags, Is there anyway to ask the recipient if they are Vegan? Or have health related concerns like Diabetes? Just a thought so that the free food they receive does not get unused or wasted!!! Thank you Capital Area...

I am an undergrad student at Howard University, and I was looking for places to serve my community in the DMV. In August 2022, I found CAFB and have volunteered here on a regular basis ever since. Every time I volunteer, I am greeted with a smile and a hello. The staff is wonderful and a joy to interact with! Ms. Sherman at the front desk is kind and personable. Rich, the volunteer coordinator, always makes sure to give instructions and safety tips before we start anything; and he is always sure to let you know the impact of your days work, who you are serving, and the mission of the food bank. His playlist is so good, it makes the time more enjoyable and fun. It is a pleasure to volunteer at a place where I can make connections with other members in the community, serve those in need, and have a...

Capital Area Food Bank provides great opportunities for you to volunteer and make a positive impact in the community. I've volunteered multiple times at the DC facility in recent months. First off, their online registration and volunteer sign-up process makes it extremely easy to find an opportunity that fits your availability. When you arrive to volunteer, there's free on-site parking, it's a quick and easy orientation of sorts, then you're soon sorting or boxing food alongside several other volunteers. It feels good to know that the time you put in helps provide food to those in need.

Friendly, fun and easy. Easy online sign up and record keeping of your volunteer hours. TASKS: We sorted canned food, assembled cardboard boxes, and created family food kits. FACILITY: It's clean, lockers are available for coats and things, lots of parking, and a nice break room with vending machines. Clean bathrooms. Consider bringing work gloves. Wear closed-toe shoes and well fitting work clothes for safety. Teens must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Bring your lunch if working for the day because there are no quick food restaurants nearby.
