My date and I went into this restaurant for breakfast, thinking we were going to get ordinary American fare. What we got was SO much better. We were treated to an authentic Ethiopian breakfast experience, with rich flavorful coffee, freshly made hot chocolate and a veggie platter on top of soft injera bread. The side dish we ordered was wonderful as well and everything was refreshingly healthy!

What was even better though was the service. I've rarely experienced this level of personalization. The owner of the restaurant came out to show us how to eat the traditional Ethiopian way as well as to ask how we liked the flavor profile. She offered to make us special dishes should be return. She also was generous in sharing some of the history of the food and her culture, enlightening me about the history of coffee making as I looked at a visual display that showed murals of that process. We could not have selected a better location to start our day.

Check this place out. It's a food gem hidden in the city and the service is 2nd to none. It's a must for anyone who likes authentic food profiles and fantastic,...

This tiny, unassuming storefront is home so some of the best Ethiopian we’ve had in DC! Decided to try a new place for lunch on a whim, and absolutely loved the fresh-made and flavorful food made by Gueny herself. The special tibs were so delicious, served with shiro and collard greens. The injera was nice and spongy with good flavor. Gueny was so kind, checking on us to make sure we were doing ok and offering to explain the food as we were looking at the menu. The space is small but there are a few tables, but it would also be good for carry-out (I’m not sure if you can call ahead but it may be a good idea - everything is made to order so it takes time, but is certainly worth it!). Can’t wait to return to try the breakfast, coffee, and...

Staying in DC a few days and found this place with a breakfast search. Gueny was awesome. Regular cappuccinos were delicious, large and reasonable under $4. Husband had a traditional breakfast and it was perfect. I got adventurous and had the regular foul to try something unfamiliar. Super yummy spicy bean mixture with fresh cut veggies and yogurt. Mix it all together and it was so good!! I’m already thinking about how to recreate something similar at home! Bread was an excellent accompaniment. Don’t be in a hurry though. It’s a slow paced setting and everything is hand made from scratch. Highly recommend for a different or familiar...

this place is so bomb!!! and might be the best ethiopian i’ve ever had :D i got the 5 veggie sampler for 15 dollars and it was so much food, in my mind it could have easily served two. the green beans were super tender and liked how it was the whole bean!! the cabbage was sweet, the two types of lentils spicious, and the collard greens were so comforting and nice. the owner (gueny) was so incredibly kind and gave me some shiro to try for free and it was THE BEST i’ve ever had. so smooth and well rounded without feeling greasy!!! such quality food from great people!! please come out to support this small owned business, you won’t regret it!

We came across Gueny's completely by accident while visiting family in 16th Street Heights. We just walked in to get coffee, and loved Ethiopian option: great coffee in beautiful little cups, with incense adding a bit of ceremony. It was so good we had that breakfast croissants. And they were so good we came back with the family for dinner, and were served some of the best Ethiopian food I've ever tasted: fresh and flavorful, and lots of it, and great prices. We'll return next time we're in Washington.
