The Bridge Cafe is one of American University's hidden gems. The coffee is delicious (and surprisingly well-priced) and the atmosphere is just the right amount of casual. Even when the place is packed, you usually don't have to wait too long to snag a seat. And if you're looking to pass the time, they have a nice selection of games to keep you occupied.
