Hender's Bake Shop & Cafe — Restaurant in Waterbury

I wrote the first yelp review of Henders way back in 2016. Gave her 5 stars. I've been a frequent customer throughout the years. Unfortunately I will never shop there again. The owner is abusive. The first time she yelled at me I let it go. I figured she was stressed out. The second time was a couple weeks ago. Spent $100 on cookies and she yelled at me from the kitchen for not ordering ahead of time. I tried to explain there was something up with the website, but she didn't want to hear it. Said it was a personal problem. The third time she yelled at me was just a few days ago. I ordered $90 on cookies a little after 9am. Website said they'd be ready at 9:40. We went in around 10:15. Cookies weren't ready and she screamed at us again from the kitchen that we had all f’ing week to order the cookies. I'm done. She just lost a customer that has spent hundreds of dollars at her store. She also lost my family who also spent lots of money there. What a shame. My boyfriend and I stopped in at Hender’s on the way home from a short trip to Burlington. We were looking for coffee but surprisingly we found some of the best food we’ve ever eaten. A moist maple walnut scone that was lightened sweetened, topped with a maple frosting. Breakfast empanadas that were filled with that day’s stuffing: black beans and red peppers; it was cooked so well too. Crunchy empanada shell that wasn’t greasy and fluffy eggs on the inside! We also took home a magic cookie bar that was so good and the apple pie. OMG it’s amazing. The apples held their shape, the streusel topping was cooked amazingly, and the crust was just beyond good. It almost tastes to me like a crossaint crust. My boyfriend said sweet and flaky like a kouignaman. Seriously the best apple pie I have ever tasted. I would definitely stop by again on a future...

I ordered online and then my office mate asked to add to the order so I went over prior to pick up Time to see if I could add to the order. The Persian at the counter noted I was early for the pickup time and I explained I wasn’t trying to pick up my order early, just trying to see if I could add to it for my office mate. The person at the counter went out back to ask if I could add to the order and the person in the back started yelling “she is twenty minutes early. Tell her the pickup time is the pickup time and she isn’t getting it early!!” Again, I was not trying to pick my order up early, I was doing as asked on their website and adding to the order in person which I explained to the counter person twice.
