The food here is very fresh and high quality. Honestly probably the best tasting sushi in Waterbury. The restaurant is comfortable although it can get so busy and packed some weeknights. Besides having been coming here for years, I actually worked here as a server over a the summer about a year ago and I’ve noticed the owner (the main sushi chef) and his wife have very little regard for customer satisfaction besides in the quality of their food. Being a server here I’ve gotten to see first hand how well they keep everything from the fridge to storage completely clean and sanitized and dated. All food is cycled accordingly and dated for freshness, and they do everything and anything to eliminate the chance of cross contamination. Other than the high quality food when it comes to accommodating for the customer there’s absolutely no empathy. From wrong orders, to ingredients the customer didn’t realize where in the food so now they would like to have it remade, to a lady complaining about a food poisoning incident, there is absolutely no considering or accommodations for the customer. The owner, Singo, is either always right, or never wrong. There’s no way around this and it was just sad to see that simple things that could be easily fixed with good customer service and resolving the problem that would have the customer returning wouldn’t even be an idea for the owner. There’s also little regard for the employees for there were some occasions where he’d get frustrated and yell and curse the chefs in the back or the servers on staff loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear, or sometimes just blatantly in front of everyone, which in turn makes the whole environment awkward and silent. It’s unfortunate because the atmosphere can be good and relaxing and the food is top notch but if management continues the way it is it doesn’t seem like this sushi spot will excel in more ways...
Read moreFor years I’ve heard rave reviews about Singo, so my mother-in-law, husband, and I stopped in for dinner tonight. While it’s exceptionally cold outside at the moment, I don’t think there was any heat on at all - it was freezing in the restaurant! Sat down and my chair cushion popped off of the seat and had to swap it out. Server was nice and food arrived quickly, we were in and out in an hour. However, we found everything to be extremely average. They’re known for their baked rolls, and I’m still left wondering exactly what that means. I had the chicken teriyaki roll, which was mostly filled with cucumber, and the sushi pieces were so huge that it was difficult to eat. I also ordered the steak teriyaki, and I’ve never received it like this before. The teriyaki sauce was non-existent, and it had very thin slices of beef that were mostly fat. Definitely was not worth the $23. My husband said his hot night 2 roll was overly drowned in sauce and had too much rice, and his salmon was sliced so thin that you could actually see the wasabi underneath - at all of the places we’ve been to, we’ve never seen that before. My mother in law was fine with the tuna tartare. We’re really left wondering what all of the...
Read moreThe food was fresh, the service was good. Unfortunately, the sushi rice was not great. The special rolls seemed a little too loose, and the presentation was very sloppy. The toppings look like they were thrown on, not placed with purpose. I always order omakase and I was a little disappointed when the chef just picked something off the menu. I like to see creative chefs that will put something new together on the spot. I did receive a free side that he made, and it was pretty good. They do not sell sake! When I asked about it, I was directed to the liquor store in the same strip mall. Since I love cold sake, I was disappointed with this, and settled for green tea. The tea was good. The restaurant is very small. It looks like they might be expanding into the area next door, but the chef didn't speak English very well so it was a bit hard to have a conversation, he was not Japanese... they very rarely are. Overall, it was just an "ok" experience. Out of the three sushi bars I tried in Waterbury, this comes in second place, but it's...
