My family are regular customers to this restaurant but never again after members of our party were BURNED BY A FIREBALL AND STILL BILLED.
during our visit our chef (a kind man) sent a wall of flames that engulfed the heads of my family members. They received burns to their faces and arms and had hair burned off. They were rushed to the restroom to put water and ice on their burns. The table still had puddles of burning oil which my family took it on ourselves to extinguish and clean when the staff did not. Seeing as the injuries could be treated with ice we stayed and finished our meals. Aside from our chef who was kind and apologetic we were avoided by wait staff like the plague. While other tables received good service from the staff we received very infrequent contact and dirty looks.
Now I want to say my family was kind during this time we did not yell at any staff members as in the end this was an unfortunate accident with thankfully, only minor injuries. Following this we ate our meal with ice on their burns and had a pleasant time. Our chef gave us an envelope with an undisclosed gift card in it (we never opened it).
When this establishment lost our buisiness was when they brought us the bill at the end of our meal. We didn't expect to be treated like royalty but I don't believe it is too outrageous to expect not to pay for a meal after my family was LIT ON FIRE! We kindly told our waiter that we would not pay the bill after our experience but he demanded we pay but if we come back TWO more times our third would be free. We demanded to see the manager but she refused to comp our meal. We were furious but compromised by returning the gift certificate in exchange for not paying our meal. I cannot stress enough that our chef was kind and apologetic and I hope he is not disciplined by Izumi's horrendous management.
My issue is with the management who do not understand that if your buisiness comes with a risk of injury you should have the integrity to take responsibility when your customers are...
Read moreWe went for a birthday dinner and had the worst service for our party of 6. We had a server come and take drink and app orders and hibachi dinner order. That's where thr service stopped. Our table did not get soup and salad served to us, no one came to ask if we needed anything else - I'd like to mention that all the other tables around is had servers that came to check on them and had soup and salad brought to them. We had to ask our chef for sauces for the meal because no one served them until after the entire meal was served, and even then only served half of our party with them before leaving. When it was time for the bill, the other tables had bills brought to their tables and we had to go up to the bar to ask for our bill. We asked for an adjustment on the bill for the fact that the soup and salad was not served at all and that no one came to actually check on anything. The server said she would pack the soup and salad for us but we asked for the bill to be adjusted as we already were done with our meal and didn't want the food anymore. The server yelled at us and said that they were really busy, and mind you no one had raised their voice tk her at all but we're asking that they take into account the lack of service we received when everyone else seemed to be getting the experience they paid for. The manager was asked about an adjustment and she also refused saying that they were so busy and that the offer to pack the soup and salad was made and that was enough. We tried to explain that we just want to make sure that others didn't experience the same lack of care but the server walked away yelling at us. We ended up paying the bill and leaving but it was the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have been in the hospitality industry my whole life and would have fired any one of my staff for behaving in this defensive manner to a customer when in the wrong - needless to say, this place is absolutely not up to basic civil standards and we won't be patroning...
Read moreOk so im from the local area and would frequent Izumi for the better part of nearly 2 decades. The food tastes great, dont get me wrong, delicious even. But my qualms revolve around a few ‘other’ experiences... on more than one occasion they tried to serve me a sirloin and pass it off as a filet mignon - to which i notably objected being i know what i am orderinging regardless of the fact that i was in my early 20s then. I can only assume they figured i would not know the difference. Thats not even the point of this review. There were quite a few instances where i became ill after having dinner at their restaurant in Wayne NJ on rt 23. The first time i became sick to my stomach i thought nothing of it, not thinking to pinpoint the catalyst as the meal i had eaten previously the night before. Over the course of time and having eaten there on various other occasions i noticed i became ill once again.. the last time this happened was 2 years ago when i was very suspicious of the meal i ordered from their restaurant. End result, I was experiencing symptoms of salmonella and sure enough, after testing the food, you guessed it. It was awful. Symptoms were very intense for 2 whole weeks and my stomach and bowels took 6-8 weeks to completely subside. I love the food, taste and presentation is all fine and dandy but its been 2 years and i WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. Try Mt Fuji in Suffern NJ. I know its a bit farther away but if occasional traditional authentic Japanese hibachi and sushi are your thing, there is literally no question or competition. Sorry Izumi but you let me down. The 2 stars is bc of the atmospheres aesthetics and the chefs’ display at the tables. True review. Just being honest. Havent caught a stomach virus since, and come to think of it never caught one before these experiences so.... balls in your court, i wont tell you to not go there... ...
