I can't comment on the Chinese food, only on the Japanese food, so if you are after Chinese, then skip this review. I'm always keen to try different Japanese restaurants having lived in Japan for 14 years and being married to a Japanese. She was actually a sushi chef so I would consider both of us knowledgeable when it comes to Japanese cuisine. Now, I understand that this restaurant is located in Webster and not LA or NY. I also understand that there are no Japanese working at this restaurant so I should expect a bit below what I would expect. The Asian Pearl is below my expectations. We entered the restaurant and the hostess' greeting was absent. She went through the motions to seat us. Taking her leave without even saying our waiter would be right over. Does she understand a host/hostess needs a little enthusiasm? Our waiter popped over and took our drinks and we looked at the menu. I ordered a Kirin Beer. He returned with a beer bottle. No glass. If you have been served in Japan, you'll know the problem with that. When we were ready to order, I was disappointed that bento dinners were only for lunch. With the weather so hot, I thought, my next choice would be somen noodles. While they were pictured cold (yum!) they only serve them hot. Ok, let's go with third choice, Katsu Tori. I ordered a Pina Colada at that point. Besides our waiter, there was another waitress on duty and I would say about 6 groups sitting down/at the bar. Our food arrived any my wife was given a fork for her sushi roll. Fork? She's Asian! Hard to miss that. Why not chop sticks? We has to ask. My Katsu Tori was set before me. Eh? No rice, no shredded cabbage on the side. I asked my waiter where my rice was. He asked, 'Does it come with rice?' Eh? When he returned I asked about my cocktail. He had forgotten so went over to had it made. My wife's Eel sushi roll was so-so she said. She could probably make a better role with both hands tied and only her little toe read the expression on her face. My Tori Katsu was.... the worse I ever had. It was as though the cook had no recipe and made it by looking at a picture. There was hardly any panko and it had a thick layer of flour. The result was as I lifted it, the outer layer of fried flour just flopped off. My mother taught me the importance of finishing my meal, and I did so. The waiter never asked, "How is everything/How is your meal?" As we paid the hostess said, "See you guys" Sorry, but no, you won't ever see me. The irony was that today was my birthday, and I talked my wife out of several places because I was yearning for Japanese. While ordering Chinese at the Asian Pearl might have been a tad smarter, the "I don't care attitude" of the staff might had ruined that meal as well. If you know good Japanese or want to learn what good Japanese is, try Wanokura in Milford, or travel to Worcester or Naitic for Japanese food made by Japanese. If you have no idea what Japanese food, good luck at the...
Read moreI was trying to order dinner one night as I have ordered from here many many times and ALWAYS THE SAME MEALS. Well on this particular occasion I called in an order for pickup. I was greeted on the phone and immediately put on hold. When the woman returned on the line she was absolutely and completely rude and unprofessional. Now my order was for 2 dinner plates, the first being porfi fried rice with 3 sides crab Rangoon, chicken fingers, and beef teriyaki ok great no problem. Then I go to order my 2nd dinner plate pork fried rice 3 sides double crab Rangoon and an egg roll. The lady argued with me "it's not a combo, u can't do that" and was overall completely rude to me. My two dinner plates were only different by the side orders and anyone with half a brain can see the slight small difference. Well I hung up after being treated rudely and went in to speak with the manager. When I walked in the restaurant was almost empty and the woman who answered the phone sat at the desk eating and looking as rude as she was on the phone. When I asked to speak with the manager he was working the bar. After waiting another 10 minutes the manager came over and when I had explained to him about the rude service provided to me by his staff he acted as though he didn't hear me and just looked at the woman stuffing her face at the desk . Then the manager went on to explain to me that when the restaurant is busy (it was almost empty) sometimes the chef gets mad when u order a custom meal...they had no issue with the 1st dinner plate: pork fried rice, crab Rangoon, chicken fingers, beef terriyaki, but the 2nd order : pork fried rice 2 sides of crab Rangoon and an egg roll (same thing I have ALWAYS ORDERED FOR MONTHS NOW) was to much of a custom order and it angered the chef and couldn't be done. I am very upset and honestly pist off that a restaurant, a place where you go to have food prepared how u want and what you want, wouldn't place my order for me ! And I'm disgusted at the fact that the woman answering the phone was rude unprofessional and when I went there she was just sitting there filling her face with her own food, and the manager did nothing about it and gave me the worst excuse not explanation but excuse for their ABSOLUTE POOR AND UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE !!! I DO NOT AND WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO NO ONE BECAUSE APPARENTLY YOU EAT WHAT THEY SAY U EAT AND HOW THEY SAY U EAT IT! Furthermore I have been going there for over a year and I can promise you they have lost...
Read moreTime and again disappointed by this place. At our most recent visit we were the only patrons in the resturaunt. So it was mindblowing that after being seated and having the hostestimate bring our drinKS we still had to wait over 15 minutes for the waitress to get up from folding napkins to come take our order! When we tried to order from the lunch menu she told us "sorry you missed. Ended at 3 o'clock". It was 3:05! Had the she been more attentive to the only table with customers and came when we got there it would have been before 3pm! We ended up walking out and spending our money elsewhere. Regarding past visits, the lighting is terrible probably to cover the fact that most plates and silverware are very dirty. The small glasses of fountain soda are over filled with ice, and they ask if you want more before you've even drank half then they CHARGE YOU FOR REFILLS!! Very poor business practices by not telling you upfront, AND refillin when not even empty. And that's about the only time you see the waitstaff. When they are trying to refill you. Otherwise a different staff brings your food, and when you try to get the waitstaff attention they take forever to come or forget the things you ask for! The food is mediocre at best. The chef constantly changes recipies (per the manager, upon compaint of something not tasting ANYTHING like what it did the last time i ordered, & not having ANY spice despite having a "spicy" mark...
