My wife and I have dined here twice—once for drinks and appetizers, and once for a date night dinner. The ambiance is pleasant, with a nicely designed interior, and the prices are somewhat lower than comparable steakhouses in the area, like Smith & Wollensky. That said, we haven’t found anything especially impressive about Black & Blue Wellesley. Everything has been adequately executed, but overall it feels mediocre, and it’s still fairly expensive.
For example, while our bone-in ribeye was cooked as requested, the quality of the meat itself was underwhelming. It lacked marbling and the taste just left us feeling indifferent; we both agreed that the steaks we grill from Whole Foods Wellesley tend to be of consistently higher quality. The cocktails here are fine and somewhat more affordable at around $15 (compared to S&W), but they still aren’t cheap and don’t feel particularly inspired or interesting. When comparing steak tartares, the one here is good but quite basic, while at S&W, for only $6 more, it’s prepared tableside with added touches like bone marrow, enhancing both the taste and experience.
The service on both visits has been competent, though a bit impersonal, which may just be a result of the restaurant’s early days. Even when comparing it to newer, slightly more casual, spots like Dryft, we feel they offer some more memorable dishes; even their French fries stand out.
So far, we can’t think of anything at Black & Blue that isn't better at another restaurant in the area, but it’s always nice to have another option, and we’ll continue to retry...
Read moreOn Friday 10/11 Ate at the bar with mixed results Beautiful location and stunning bar. Ate at the bar ordered she crab soup and a crab cake as a 2 course meal. Beauty does not mean execution. From order to service took 27 minutes for the crab cake to be served. First. Before the soup ever came. Bartender was nice enough to send the crab cake back but I knew that it wouldn’t work out well. Another 5 minutes and a soup course that should take 30 seconds to plate came. She crab soup was amazing. Bread with the soup would have been nice seeing how many baskets of bread are floating around. Finished the soup asked the bartender to fire my crab cake and within 1 minute the fully plated crab cake shows up. Being a former server I had my suspicions so I very much so stuck my finger in the middle of the crab cake and it was luke warm. So of course they re served to me the sent back crab cake. NOT COOL. Come on. I took a few bites but lukewarm crab cakes are kind of not my jam don’t know about you. Bartender was nice enough to take the crab cake off of my bill but offered nothing else. General thoughts execution is super spotty food service to the bar is a cattle call from the food runners which I can’t stand and the food runners did not know bar seat numbers and tried to deliver me a to go steak before I left. Beautiful space pretty looking food. Execution is all over the place. Stop food auctions sorry pet peeve but it just screams out we are a diner not a high end...
Read moreMy partner and I recently celebrated our anniversary at Black & Blue in Wellesley and it was a phenomenal experience. We were were wished a happy anniversary by the host and by pretty much every member of the B&B team. The decor and ambiance were beautiful and we were seated at a table with a full view of the restaurant, with just the right amount of privacy for our special occasion. The manager took the time to personally congratulate us, thank us for our patronage and stopped by several times to ensure our experience was top notch. Our servers were highly attentive and made us feel at ease.
The food and drink were scrumptious - we especially enjoyed the sides of Mexican Street Corn and Hash Browns. They served to be the perfect compliment to our steak and snapper entrees, which were delicious as well. We were also provided with complimentary champagne for our celebration - what a thoughtful touch!
We would highly recommend Black & Blue in Wellesley. If you are looking for a high end dining experience where the staff makes you feel special, then this is the...
