I recently visited Redcoat Tavern in West Bloomfield about a month ago on a Monday night. The first thing I noticed was that the service was friendly, albeit average, which was not surprising since the restaurant appeared to be understaffed—a challenge for all restaurants in today’s world. Additionally, our table was disappointed that the onion rings we ordered never arrived. Despite these shortcomings, I was excited to try some of the dishes that Redcoat Tavern is known for, particularly their famed redcoat burger.

Here's how I rated the dishes:

Baked Onion Soup au Gratin aka French Onion soup (9/10) - It was absolutely delicious. The savory flavor of the soup was well balanced with the perfect amount of caramelized onions, and the bread had a great texture. The cheese on top was melted to perfection, although I would have preferred it to slightly overhang the rim of the bowl. One of the better French Onion soups I have had.

Mac n Cheese (7.5/10) - Had an above-average crust and decent flavor enhanced with garlic. It was made with a blend of three cheeses, and while it wasn't the best mac n cheese I have ever had, it was still quite tasty.

Brasserie Burger and Truffle Fries (5/10) - Unfortunately, I was left feeling underwhelmed. While the burger had a great temperature and average structural integrity (burger slipped out when taking a bite), it was extremely heavy on the Dijon mustard-mayonnaise and bacon. In fact, the bacon overpowered the flavor of the patty, and there were countless strips on it, which was too much. The bacon was also quite fatty, which detracted from the overall flavor and texture. As for the truffle fries, they had a soggy texture and limited truffle taste. The cheese also overpowered the fries, which was disappointing.

Raspberry-Pecan Bread Pudding (6/10) - While I have a sweet tooth, I found this dish to be overly sweet, and I only had a couple of bites. It may be a good dish to order for the table to share, but overall, it was unremarkable. Next time I will order the Hot Fudge Cream Puff or the Ice Cream Burger.

Redcoat Tavern is a decent restaurant for the West Bloomfield area, but I would like to try their Royal Oak location to see if the experience is any different. While the French Onion soup and Mac n Cheese were enjoyable, the Brasserie Burger, Truffle Fries, and Raspberry-Pecan Bread Pudding were underwhelming. I would recommend giving this place a try but be prepared for some...

Consistently awful. Thankfully, I only go to this substandard dive about once per year, and then only because almost no other place in the area will serve food past 10 pm. I can't think of any other reason why anyone would ever enter this hell hole. It is horribly loud, the servers are clueless and customer requests are routinely ignored. The cooks are awful. They have over-cooked every burger I have ever ordered for the past ten years. I assume they will only cook burgers well done or medium well since those are the only two ways my hamburgers have ever been served, notwithstanding the fact that every time I have specifically asked that they not prepare it that way. On my most recent visit, my server, Nicole, absolutely assured me that my burger would be served medium, meaning "pink throughout". I assured her that would never happen because it would require a level of competence that I have never experienced from any cook at that incompetent eatery. Nicole promised that she would speak to the cook herself to assure that it would be prepared exactly as promised. Nicole turned out to be as clueless as the rest of the kitchen staff when she returned with yet another well done hamburger. I just don't think that their cooks know how to serve any burger any other way, and they certainly don't care to make any attempt whatsoever to please any patron. Why should they? They never interact with any. The Caesar salad was equally awful, tasteless with really oily burnt croutons. In my opinion, this dump is just McDonald's with a liquor license. Which is good since you would likely have to be totally drunk to enjoy a meal there. Unless you completely hate yourself, or have no other reasonable choice for a late night restaurant, I would avoid Redcoat Tavern. Actually since I have never witnessed any burger served any other way than well done or medium well, perhaps they should change the name to Browncoat...

I went in on a Tuesday around 7:30 while traveling on business. I was alone and was seated right away. I ordered an alcoholic beverage and when it arrived I asked the waitress where the restroom was. I was gone for literally less then 2 min., when I returned my table was cleared. My menu and drink were gone. The hostess, who sat mr not 8 minutes ago, exclaimed, "You werent done?!" I explained that I just stepped away to the restroom and that I had just received my drink which was cleared. The hostess states "we just saw drinks, so the busser cleared it. We usually clear tables that only have drinks." It was as if to say I should have known better than to step away without food on my table. I explained that my water and cocktail were completely full, but she just repeated again that there were only drinks on the table. At this point the busser who was lingering beside the hostess chimes in stating, "Oh, I saved your drink, I'll go get it." A minute later he returns with my drink. Where was it I asked. "I saved it," he replies. At this point I don't know what to think. He didn't "save" my water, why would he "save" my alcoholic beverage. Further, it looks like it may have a sip out of it and I can't get that out of my head.

I finished my meal, the burger was just okay despite its reputation, but the scotch egg was quite good. I never touched the drink and had it removed from my bill. Even after this incident, which the server wasn't aware of, the service was very slow.

I will not be back. A decent scotch egg is not worth being forgotten, treated like an idiot, and having to share your drinks with the staff. I would have been perfectly content of they just offered to bring me a new drink from the beginning, but that didn't happen.

I will not be back. I suggest you find another...

The last time I was at Red Coat Tavern, was 3 years ago. It still looks the same. It's kind of a dark atmosphere, lots of tables crammed in together, but the food quality is excellent. I ordered the Tenderloin tips for an appetizer, which came with Cajun spices and a Cajun cream sauce. Not as spicy as I was anticipating, which is good. I didn't want to melt my taste buds before I got to the real reason I came. There are few places in my opinion that make a great Chicken Pot Pie. You can go to mom & pop/family style restaurant and get the classic chicken pot pie, that's cooked in the classic tin dish with what looks like premade ingredients. Or you can go to Red Coat Tavern and get this very unique chicken pot pie. It is served in an oblong shallow bowl with cubes of potatoes, carrots, onions, peas, celery and chunky pieces of chicken in a nice cream sauce. More chicken than I was expecting, which is really what you want. On top of that is a free floating large puff pastry. Maybe 1.5-2" thick. It's like that pull apart puffy pastry you get from a bakery. Not something I would expect to see served in a restaurant. I wanted to use my fingers to pull it apart, but instead was proper and used a knife and fork. Once pulled apart the pastry instantly started soaking up the creamy base of the dish. A perfect bite with all the vegetables, a chunky piece of chicken and a piece of the creamy soaked puff pastry. The 3 star is for how shocked I was at the price of food for lunch. Many restaurants do a lunch and dinner special pricing menu. Not this place, WAY overpriced. But I wanted my chicken pot pie. I probably won't go back unless I'm desperate for one of my favorite dishes. Although I could be persuaded if someone treats me to lunch.
