If I had the chance to not use the stars at all... I love latin cousine, a special place takes Peruvian food, so when an afternoon following a museum we googled up this place we were very pleased with the food, not so much of a great service, but a really good meal, generous size and nice prices too...that made me decide that a family gathering of 14 years it was a good place to choose. I don't know if the stars were not "properly aligned" that day, but pretty much everything that happened ruined the day, the occasion and of course our mood. We were a party of 16, when we arrived, the place was empty on a Saturday around 3pm, which seems normal. Nevertheless, we sat for almost an hour without any bread/chips or whatever, no one asked us if needed anything else , like drinks??? which was still ok at that point. After waiting for the waiter, we chose a bottle of red and white wine ( can not name it anything else, because the list basically sucked), we were served 2 open bottles of wine at the table, and left there standing, so we had to serve it ourselves...maybe it was not so bad that there were opened beforehand. when the food actually arrived, from 5 "pariiladas" only 4, one of them was burned...to my two hungry kids, was nothing to give. After 15 min, the "management" agreed to exchange it and the waiter implied, hence it was my decision not to take it that I will have to wait for another 20 min or so (remember that the 5th one, still was wondering around the kitchen probably). To my request of bringing something to the kids, meanwhile they were waiting (French fries, chips, bread...) I was told that they had nothing and I should ask my party to share the food. Since, I was unable to chew on anything, but a huge embarrassment in front of my family, who were in Chicago for their first time. When I finally asked to speak to the manager I was told that the waiter lady is the assistant manager, and if I had any complains talked it thru with her. Needless to say that to the "bread" excuse I was told that they had none (which my husband overruled, pointing at the table near us), then that it was not fresh, so she decided not to offer it. That they did not know who was drinking what, so they could not serve it properly, and finally that they don't have salt or pepper, since all their meals were "well seasoned". To top this of, we got a bill for almost $900, which was pretty much all "doubled", after pointing at this small mistake, we were told, that they were in a hurry to dismiss us. And the last but not least - all the prices in the bill were $2 higher than in the menu, it appears that I got the only "2 year old menu", which I 've decided no matter what find in the restaurant, And I FOUND IT. The manager (actually the father of the owner) asked me if I would like "to make him cry a river in front of me" or pay the $2 difference out of his pocket, or if my intention was to humiliate him ....no apologies, + %18 of gratuity of a $500 bill +a ruined day+ not 1 offered drink for the kids....I guess the water standing in the pitcher on the table was suppose to cover that. Good luck, they...
Read moreYesterday we decided to go to Rios for Mother's day and of course we made reservations. It was pointless. We were seated and we ordered our appetizers, There were 3 large parties and 1 or 2 other scattered tables. I ordered chicha morada, which is a sweet corn drink. It went bad (fermented since it's made from corn). How do i know this? I'm Peruvian, I know what it's supposed to taste like. The waitress said she would take it away but that "no one else had complained." Still we're waiting for our appetizers. At that point after an hour and a half (not wanting to leave to find another random restaurant), I spoke to the waitress again. She said "we have large parties, that's why the food is taking so long." I told her we haven't even gotten our appetizers and it's been 90 mins. She was going to check. She came back and told us, they would be right out. At this point, tired, hungry and frankly annoyed, I decided to find out from the manager if that was in fact true. He said (in a matter of fact kind of way), that the food was going in order of being seated. So in other words, it wasn't even ordered since we came after all the parties.I asked the waitress and she said, "yes I'm sorry the truth is, yes the cooks haven't even started." At that point, we decided to leave and our waitress gave us the check for the bad drink, the cocktail my mom ordered and the Peruvian soda, my brother didn't even drink. I laughed and told our waitress, "one the drink (chicha) I took a sip of is on this check, 2. here is the soda my brother waited to drink until the food came, which obviously never did and the pisco sour, which was also mediocore, I can pay for. I think at that point, they wanted us out because of my pestering. They "kindly" gave us the pisco sour and I was on our way but good news. We found a Peruvian restaurant 10 minutes away in which the service was excellent and food was fine. What Rio on Chicago restaurant didn't realize is this "yes large parties are $$ at the moment (special occasions); it's the couples or families that come over and over that long term that will be faithful.I can't even comment about the food because it never came. It was sad that they treated us this way and hope management reflects that ALL clientele is important not just...
Read moreMy wife and I have ordered delivery here several times and I will say in all honesty the food is very good - Ceviche especially. The reason for my 1 star review is that my wife and I were guests of a 15 person party that had a reservation for one of our good friends birthdays. The gentlemen who was the host (maybe the owner) was the most unprofessional / unaccommodating and rude host I have ever encountered. We first arrived 5 minutes before the group reservation which was at 7:30. He told us and others they had no more room and turned us away originally. He had trouble understanding we were with the party that had the 7:30 reservation (no major issue here just language barrier and not a very welcoming demeanor). Next our friends arrived at 7:36 yes they were 6 minutes late. There were only 2 other tables seated and about 15 - 18 open tables. The host came outside and said we can all come in now that those who booked the reservation were there. We all sat and originally the reservation was for 20 but yes 5 people had canceled day of (not much the person who booked could do at that point). After sitting for 15 minutes and no one came to give water or serve us. Our friend whose birthday it was asked the host if there was an issue and why we were not being waited on. He became angry and let her know that the reservation was canceled and they were not serving us because they were late (6 minutes late mind you) and we didn't have 20 people. What a way to ruin someone's birthday party which had several friends traveling in for dinner. Luckily another restaurant was able to accommodate us on short notice. As much as I enjoy the food I will never order from here or eat there again. I did not go into detail on the host's demeanor but it was flat out awful he was visibly angry and yelling and also he was yelling at other customers who were coming in saying no more reservations. I left and calmly said that he was very rude and he will be getting several negative reviews on Google as a result of his demeanor. My wife overheard him then say "I am going to kick him" after I said this. He clearly didn't want to be working or working late and should have never accepted a 7:30 reservation if they expect to close by 8pm...
