I ordered Rangoli for delivery. I am from a city with a lot of incredible Indian food. I was apprehensive about ordering because the Indian food in Chicago is some of the worst food I've ever had across the board. I am compelled to review because this is the best Indian food I've had in Chicago by a significant margin and I think a lot of previous reviews are unfair.
First, I would like to acknowledge that a lot of Indian curry is traditionally oil/ghee based. The spices are fried in oil before all of the components to make the gravy are added. A lot of recipes even instruct to cook the curry until the oil separates. This curry wasn't even especially oily compared to others I've had. Something to consider.
I ordered some basics-- butter chicken, keema samosa and onion kulcha. The price for all of it was a little steep, but not totally unreasonable. The portions were adequate. I will easily get three meals out of it. The samosas were incredibly dry, but the flavor is definitely there-- pleasantly spicy and really tasty when dipped in chutney. The butter chicken was an ideal consistency, very rich with a generous amount protein. It wasn't as spicy as I like, but that wasn't anything a little cayenne couldn't fix. The onion kulcha was delicious. The spicy mint chutney is excellent. If you know decent Indian food and have that craving, this place will absolutely...
Read moreI have lots of complaints from Chicago when it comes to Indian food. Rangoli and Vajra and some stuff at Namaste Chicago are the only 3 places I am grateful to have I found, given everything else is so bad.
Best Biryani and Best Samosa in Chicago. I have been looking for Biryani that I am used to eating in India. This comes the closest and the best. Every other restaurant in Chicago sells masala rice with chicken or lamb. None are biryani. If someone could just added potato and egg Rangoli's biryani can become authentic Kolkata Biryani.
I have to say very few places get the samosa right. Their samosa comes closest to home. When I say home I mean UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal. We don't add peanuts or unmashed potatoes in our samosa. The potato was properly mashed with love with no lumps and thoroughly mixed, with right amount of spice and salt. Everything was just right. Crispy at the corners and right amount of brown.
I have not tried anything else from here.. I would love to. But thank you so much. Hope they keep up the good work and...
Read moreI had ordered veg biryani it was kind of street food from India The rice was pretty basic not basmati also and it was like 80% of white rice and 20% of vegetables. It was so dry to eat and there was no taste of masala in it I had to throw it without eating it and had to order it from a new place. Had also ordered Gobi Manchurian it was kind of okay it was kind of sour, no spring onions with no spring onions soya sauce and red hot. Kofta Makhabni was of $14 dish with only two koftas in it. I ordered from this restaurant after seeing the reviews on Google. It was above 4 which I thought would have some good food to eat but it didn't meet the expectation at all, may be the order dish that people have eaten where some what good after reading the reviews on Google. I wouldn't recommend this Indian restaurant in Chicago downtown if someone is visiting Chicago. I was suggest the restaurant to improve the quality of food. And make it what the money. Hopefully the restaurant would be serving some good food when I visit...
