Service is extremely good, but it doesn’t make sense how irregular the food quality is. I drive an hour to support BLack Vegan Kitchens.
It’s either hit or miss, no in-between. Desserts are the best, but the peach cobbler I had yesterday was not right. It was very sweet on top, but bottom was old and hurt my stomach. I spit it out half way after eating.
This is the second time out of maybe 30+ visits I have had downright old or dirty food. The second time I had the mushroom wings they tasted exactly like dirt.
I have had the banana blossoms(vegan catfish I think) maybe 10+ times. The last three times I had it, they were kinda mostly the batter fried. The last time I had it, it was not done frying and just greasy mess falling apart. Hurt my stomach.
The Mac is the main reason I go. Portions are small for price. Usually it’s great, but after they changed the recipe or something it’s made differently. It’s about 10% of made will be hard like glass and sometimes hot with cold. So, I don’t know if they’re mixing old when they run out or what.
I had the Italian beef fries and they were amazing, but sLimmy like oysters. I finally tried the Italian beef sandwich and was not impressed at all. It was hard bread with mushrooms sLimmy with a little cheese/sauce and a ton of crush red peppers/parsley. If you were ever a kid and chewed they fake Christmas tree…🤐
The cheesecake is also the best vegan cheesecake I ever had. It’s just usually not frozen. I did beg for some a couple times bc I was in a rush and ate it like that, and it’s good, but I guess I should’ve elaborated I want it frozen like regular cheesecake.
I don’t know if it’s the cooks making these issues or they’re too busy to have it better quality.
Don’t waste your time on the ribs/spicy chkn sandwich, just fried tofu or something with a lot of sauce.
The 290 burgers are ok, sometime burger too hard and mushrooms are always sLimmy. Would be nice to just eat a burger together like a BLack bean burger.
If portions were larger and quality consistent, I would definitely get more. Other vegan kitchens give more, but they usually lack seasonings!
Now I do go when they’re getting ready to close. I don’t know if that’s an issue, I have been a few times early, but I believe food quality should be the same.
All in all I am sad to leave, but I can’t support...
Read moreOn July 12 we visited The black vegan, food was great however the prices and the way the food was presented was terrible, no clear communication on how it was going to be served. My order was two separate wraps a order of cheese fries and a order of loaded fries(fries with many vegetables and sauce). How my mother placed the order over the phone was clear and how the owner took the order was clear. The owner who took the order even asked upon repeating the order back to my mom was the fries a separate order and my mom replied yes. The owner then charged my mom $8.00 for cheese fries and put them in the same tray as one of the wrap. She then charged us $11.00 for the loaded fries and put them in the other tray with the other wrap. Then these two little cheese cake in another huge styrofoam container. Therefore we were charged for an order of cheese fries and loaded fries but given a side of cheese fries and a side of loaded fries, but it was clear it was a separate order because it was for my little brother. When we arrived at the restaurant after waiting for over an hour for the food even though we called ahead and was presented with the food in the combined trays, the owner stated to me that she combined the food in the trays to save on the use of styrofoam. I told her that you was aware that these were separate orders and you charged me for them separately and she said well you can just return the food and get a refund. This is horrible a black owned restaurant they scam you out of your money and don’t give you what you paid for. If your trying to leave less carbon foot print on the earth in being a vegan restaurant why are you using styrofoam in the fist place? Definitely shouldn’t be using styrofoam while serving hot food in the styrofoam as the reason she had lined the styrofoam with paper (every chef knows that because of the toxins that can be released when hot food hit that styrofoam). Talk about filling up the landfills black vegan and try getting some wheat pita bread...
Read more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A vegan restaurant within walking distance of my house?! Now this is a first!!! I believe in Little Village/North Lawndale. I see so many good things happening in the community. I am overjoyed that the plant based community and small business are reclaiming what I think will be "the next frontier" (west side) of growth from the ashes in Chicago. I am so happy to support businesses like these! The Black Vegan has an Instagram page (go follow them!) with clear depictions of what all their dishes look like (if you're a visual eater, like me, this is appreciated). They are very active in trying to grow the black business community and support the Latinx community as well. If you haven't stopped by yet to show your support, what are you waiting for?! The employees are so incredibly friendly and care about people/the food. The quality was very high with everything we tried. They gave us some free samples and were very proud of the food - you can tell a lot of love goes into it. We were blown away by how the vegan ribs just melt deliciously in your mouth. These people know how to make great food and doubtless have big plans and tons of vegan recipes they'd like to roll out in the future. I can't wait to keep supporting this business and watch it grow. I hope to see multiple locations and their stuff sold in stores! I'm a big fan and rooting for...
