Dropped by for the first time for lunch. Immediately the staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous.

I ordered their rosemary turkey and cheese lunch. I’m quite happy with the sandwich taste, especially the rosemary coming through to compliment the other components. The price for that sandwich lunch was pretty reasonable for the taste and portions. I look forward to trying the other meal options.

I also ordered their butterfly tea to try. A staff member helps my choice by explaining the drink, the customization options and its effect on the taste, and started me at half sweetness level. It’s a beautiful drink thanks to the butterfly pea flower tea component that gives a lovely natural color while your flavoring choice remains your central flavor (and other color). I’d be happy to try other customization options to find my new favorite drink with Kates.

The space and atmosphere was clean, spacious for the square footage, and cozy feeling. I’d been wanting a hangout/study spot nearby ever since moving back to rural West Columbia from a metropolitan area. Kates could be that new spot to grab a drink, a meal or both, then read a book, do some study, or hang out with a friend. A nice option different from fast food and family dining in the area. I used to come here when it was 421 Coffee shop. It used to be a wonderful experience although a bit expensive. I overlooked the price due to the excellent food and drink. I happened to stop by again and although I may have took a bit long looking at the menu and asked about the contents of an item, very briskly I was rushed so I quickly made a decision, and as far as inquiring about a drink I was told in a firm forthcoming way “ this is a coffee shop, that happens to sell food” which abruptly ended the conversation and my appetite. Waited 25 minutes for a coffee, at the 20 minute mark when I asked how much longer I was told “it’s just us two” . I get it, but please inform your customers there will be a delay in service before they order so they can decide if a 25 minute wait for a drink is worth it. Didn’t appreciate the wait, or the fact two people were served before me although they came after me. (Assuming they had called ahead?? Not sure don’t care) My drink is grainy which is just the cherry on top. Don’t recommend unless you’re a local with the time to wait or the knowledge to do an order...
