My favorite pizza in 'da Burgh! The premises is old and has the old feel to it, but we don't go there for the atmosphere, we go there for the food and the friendship. I think they are cash only.
He makes a Sicilian-style square pizza, crust is light and airy, yet crispy because it is cooked on a pan in a very high-heat oven . The sauce is savory, not too sweet, and tastes awesome. The cheese is always premium - I believe he uses all provolone. Toppings are fresh. Not sure what pepperoni he uses, its not the small ones that form little cups with pools of oil inside when cooked, its more like the larger flat pepperoni from Hormel.
I always make sure to order my pie "well done". With the amount of cheese he likes to put on his pizzas, if the cheese doesn't end up being toasted on the top then the pizza lacks flavor. However, with lots of toasted bits of cheese the pizza's flavor really pops (especially the bit that runs off the pizza and toasts right on the pan, you can break it off your pizza and pop it in your mouth, yumm, cheese chips!)
The owner, Al, and his daughter, can't remember her name (she has dark hair) make these pizzas the best. Al's wife, however, bless her soul (white-haired lady) doesn't make 'em as good as the other two. Don't forget to get your pizza well done or you may not like the flavor of just-barely-melted provolone cheese! I always order mine in groups of four slices, that guarantees the most toasted cheese. A large pizza will have toasted cheese on the outside slices but the middle slices won't get toasted, therefore the middle slices are the worst in a large pizza. Hope you enjoy it as...
Read moreI’ve been to this place about 10 times in the past 2-3 yrs. I got a kennywood pass & today suggested it to my husband I wanted to order it to go. I also ordered my grandparents a few slices cause they’re a big fan of square pizza. It’s a cash only place with an ATM. First of all a boy about 10 yrs old was hanging out outside and followed me in. They said I had a few more mins to wait & to kill time I started looking at photo albums on a rack. The boy came over & knew all the history to these old photos. He was such a smart, sweet, polite young man! She told me the price & I said I had to run out to the car for the rest of $$ because I was $7 short, she told not to worrry about it& gave me a bunch of bananas. I just can’t believe how awesome this family is. The boy was the grandson of the original owners. You just instantly felt welcomed here. The pizza is amazing!! I have an Italian hoagie here I didn’t even try yet but it smells and looks amazing. It just feels loved. It’s definitely underrated. They are are open Thursday-Saturday 4-8pm. Hours are weird but worth the accommodation. The world is hard and cold. This place almost made me cry with a simple interaction with this family & the regular...
