Skippers Restaurant — Restaurant in Wheeling Township

My mother is a resident in a nearby assisted living facility. I was with her when it was time to order lunch. Not a comment on the AL facility food, but my mom didn't like anything so I told her I would get her a hamburger from a well know chain with arches. she said hamburgers are blah and said she really wanted a hot dog. there is a well know hot dog chain about 6 miles away, but I thought I would try a local place and found Skippers. Walked in and was warmly greeted, ordered and food was quickly presented at a very reasonable price. Brought the hot dog back to mom. She loved it. Said it was the best hot dog she had ever had. I thought she would eat half and I would eat half. No way. She ate the whole thing with a smile on her face the entire time. She then started on the french fries. I tried to eat a fry and she slapped my hand away saying she was eating all of them. My mom was very happy for Skipper and to see her so happy made me extremely happy. My first time visiting this place.Past it 15 times and each time always said,One day im gonna stop there and try a Gyro...Im a Gyro expert and i rate them on a scale of 0 to 10,being its EXTREMELY hard to find a great,,,the BEST,Gyro......most good ones receive a rating of 6 ta 8..NEVER a 10...Well,I ordered a Gyro plate and i must say,,,,I was BLOWN AWAY,,,by the amount,and quality of it..I was speechless just about..they are UNBELIEVABLE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS,,,they recieved a Rating of 10+,,,Nooooo problem at all...The owner was there and i must say he definitely made you feel welcome there..EXTREMELY nice...Although he should serve a warning with a Gyro plate meal,,,WARNING,,BE PREPARED TO NOT EAT F OR 2 DAYS....LOL...it was THAT GOOD....THE BESDT ANYWHERE....You MUST MUST TRY THIS PLACE...Once you do..your stuck..you WONT STOP GOING BACK...I SASLUTE Skippers hands down...Keep up the great...

This review is based solely on one experience getting an Italian beef meal eaten at the restaurant. I have only been here once. As such, the Italian beef here was not good. The meager amount of meat had very little flavor, the bread was disappointing (I can't imagine it was either Turano of Gonnella, more like super cheap crumbly rolls from discount grocery chains), the hot giardinera was very disappointing, ordered sandwich dipped and it was dry, fries were unsalted (fixable) and quite blonde and somewhat undercooked.

The giardinera was very bad, Think pickled mushy jalapenos with a tiny amount of carrots. Zero crunch. Portillos has gone down significantly in quality for the last decade, but even portillos beef today is 10x better than this.

The inside is cute and a throwback, but don't order Italian beef here. The other food has to be better or I can't imagine how they are...
