We were in Willits, for the night and went to Szechuan Asian Restaurant, based on reviews of all restaurants in the area. The atmosphere was nice, typical Chinese restaurant decor. The server was terrible. We asked for tea and he brought one cup instead of two and no spoon for the ice sugar. We ordered Miso soup and both bowls arrived barely warm. After waiting a few minutes and trying to get his or anyone's attention. I finally went to the kitchen entrance to let him know the soup was cold. By the time the manager arrived at the table, our entrees were already being served. I told the manager that since our food was already on the table to forget about the soup and take it off the bill. The two entrees were very good, beef with tofu and chicken curry. Both were served in nice sized portions and were flavorful and hot. Our two orders of brown rice were warm, not hot. No one stopped back at the table to ask how the food was or if we needed anything else. We had to make another effort to get additional hot water for the tea. We spoke to the manager after our meal and he was very apologetic for the poor service. He brought us three small fried ice cream balls which was a nice gesture. Maybe the fellow serving us was having an off night, but the dining experience was disappointing, especially in light of the positive reviews. It was not extremely busy during the 45 minutes we were there, less than half the tables were occupied. The menu was quite extensive and everything was very...
Read moreWow. I couldn't wait to review this place honestly. We are visiting first time here and this town has something in the water because these are the nicest people we've met in a long time. We went around 7 for dinner and my husband and I immediately noted how impeccably clean the restaurant is and how nice everyone who works there is! The art is very beautifully detailed inside too. The staff are obviously proud to work there which is refreshing to see. Their food is top 2 best Chinese we've ever had we had the combination chow fun, Las Vegas roll (the sushi was good too), the stuffed fried jalapeno appetizer, which was delicious not too spicy, miso soup and nigori sake. Great portions, we shared everything left with full bellies and some food to take with us. Usually I can't get my husband to eat much chow fun but he and my daughter loved this one. Our food came to the table super fast and the entire meal we had excellent service and they were super nice to our family we brought our 1 year old daughter very family friendly restaurant. The staff was very sweet to our baby girl. We had the best time and an unforgettable dining experience. Until now we had almost forgot what is was like to have a wonderful time at a restaurant without paying a tremendous amount for a meal. We are both glad we stopped in willits and ate at here it was special and we can't wait...
Read moreAh Szechuan.
I used to absolutely love this place. Crystal was a large part of the atmosphere, the wait staff were attentive, personable, and willing to listen to suggestions and make your food the way it should be -- if you asked for chinese food cooked authentically, not americanized, they'd be happy to do it for you, and happy to hear your thoughts.
Now it's just your run of the mill for-profit restaurant that takes shortcuts where it can. Gone are the days of a real menu, now you order from the take-out menu. You order $50 of sushi and you get one small plate of ginger and a dab of wasabi. You tell the waiter that your roll is burnt to the point it tastes like old, fried oil, and they say sorry and do nothing beyond that.
I used to come here 3-4 times a week and built a friendship with everyone who worked here. Now on the rare occasions I do come, I leave disappointed. Food is often overcooked, sashimi isn't taken care of, often times with bones still in it; and they won't even comp the item.
I miss the Szechuan of years past. This was my favorite restaurant in town, it felt like they took pride in what they served you. Now with competition like Hatake's Kitchen in town, I unfortunately don't see a need to continue to patronize what was once my...
