This was my second visit here as I pass through Winslow. My first stop here was not long after Covid-19 restrictions were lessened in 2021. I ordered the same item from the menu: Huevos Rancheros.
I'm usually traveling alone and usually don't spend a lot of time in one place for a meal. This visit was a bit disappointing. When I initially entered the place looked busier than before now that restrictions have been lifted.
Coffee and water came right away and I placed my order not long after as well. I walked in at 8:40 a.m., and placed my order by 8:45. Then I waited. Got two coffee refills and then it seemed to me that refills slowed down. By the time i received my food it was 9:03.
The food was warm when i received it. Not hot. Beans were warm and the cheese on top of it were not even melted. Beans had a bland flavor. Hashed brown potatoes were were warm as well with no flavor. It probably was from a frozen bulk package. I added salt to both to liven them up a bit.
The utensils given to me were wrapped in a napkin as most places do. But when i retrieved my fork I could not help but notice streaks on my spoon. So I pick it up to inspect and notice that it had not been thoroughly washed. It was wiped or maybe not even have been washed at all. I did check my fork and butter knife and they were acceptable. 😒
The eggs and green chili was my purpose to stop here. Eggs of course were cooked over easy and they were. Green chili was to my liking. No complaints about that part of my breakfast.
The staff was friendly though. Men's restroom was clean as well. The restaurant is dated and looks as Winslow does - old. Total time I spent here was 45 minutes. There were other things i observed but these were the lows and high of my visit. I did leave a decent tip. I believe in doing...
Read moreI wish I had read the reviews closer before we stopped to eat here. The low star reviews mirror our experience. My son, who eats everything, could not chew his microwaved from frozen kid’s corndog. The dog inside was blistered and after sitting, the corn breading was very hard, and possibly freezer burnt. He literally couldn’t chew the rubbery dog. How do you overcook a microwaved corndog and still serve it? My daughter’s kids meal was probably the best food on our table - it was packaged microwaved Mac N Cheese - definitely not even stove cooked. My Machaca burrito was filled with what I think was refried beans and ground beef. It looked unappetizing and wasn’t “Machaca” but I’d let that slide if the refried beans weren’t dried out and crusty and the rice didn’t feel like baby food in my mouth. The whole plate was unappetizing and the flavor was maybe two stars - it was food and I didn’t get sick after. After waiting so long we were ready to leave and had no desire to complain and wait another 30-45 minutes for possibly another blistered hotdog and more unappetizing food. After paying, we stopped by Walmart deli to get some dinner for my son who couldn’t eat his dinner. I never thought I’d say this, but I wish we’d stopped by Walmart to begin with.
What’s especially sad is that the next day we found an Arizona Historical Society book that had some history on the restaurant and the family that used to own it - it was apparently a big part of the community and a place that people in Winslow would use for family and...
Read moreBack in the 1970's I used to make business trips to Winslow. Back then the Falcon was widely known to be the best eatery in town. My wife and I were staying in our RV at a State Park just out of town and decided to go to Winslow to do some shopping. On a fluke, we decided to give the Falcon Restaurant a try.
We found the stop to be a very pleasant experience. The waitress was a young girl without a lot of experience but very competent with a nice genuine personality. She recommended the chicken fried steak special and we both complied. The steak was good with a liberal helping of white gravy but I really liked the chunky consistency of the mashed potatoes which had a nice home made quality, unlike the whipped potatoes most restaurants serve.
As we were finishing, the owner came over to ask how we liked the meal. He seemed to genuinely appreciate our patronage. When I told him I used to eat here 40 years ago he gave us some interesting information on the original owners. We don't usually eat desert but when he started to describe how the homemade pies were made right there in their kitchen we couldn't resist. We shared a piece of tasty coconut cream with a flaky crust which was easily distinguishable from factory made.
If you want a good meal with great service in a nostalgic atmosphere with reasonable pricing, I would certainly recommend a stop at the Falcon. You can't...
