We stopped in Winston Salem for the night on our way to the mountains of NC and were trying to find a non-chain restaurant to enjoy. Mexican topped the list so we started looking at ratings and reviews, and Los Juanes topped the list.
The place is unassuming, in a strip mall. There’s an attached grocery, and two entrances, so it can be a bit confusing (market on the left, restaurant on the right).
We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server was quick to get our beverages. The chips were warm and fresh, and the salsa was delicious!
We perused the very large menu, and both decided to get the same entree: chori-steak. We’re big fans of chori-pollo, so the steak sounded intriguing. I saw they had fried plantains on the menu and decided to try those as well.
The plantains came out and I’d never seen anything like these. I ate about half the plate before the server came around and I asked what was on them. A sour cream sauce and grated Mexican cheese was the answer. This is a regional specialty (I believe she said Honduras) and I found them to be absolutely delicious!
When the chori-steak came out, it was covered in onions, which was not on the menu. I was ready to pick them off, but the server took it back for a fresh plate! When she returned with a new dish, they’d also replaced the pico de gallo on the salad with fresh tomatoes. Now THAT is service, folks!
We ate our entire meal…great rice and refried beans as well as delicious steak and chorizo. Highly recommend this place to anyone…some of the best Mexican food I’ve had! I’m glad I got a picture of the plantains…never managed the entree…ate it all...
Read moreMy BF took me here for my Birthday lunch. I had been here once before and was very happy with the food and service. In a strip mall it is attached to a Mexican Bodega which you should also visit. The menu is very extensive with all your usual dishes. This place seems more traditional than most other Mexican restaurants. My BF got an Asada Taco fully loaded and he loved it. I forgot the name of my plate but it was a combination of steak, chicken and shredded chorizo plus two fried eggs, rice, beans and a salad with guacamole. Oh, and fresh tortillas that were not too thin and not too thick. The dish was fulfilling and just the right size for each protein. I could have gone without all the onions on top but that’s just me. We sat at the bar as the ambience was very casual and my BF wanted an ice cold beer. The staff is wonderful and friendly. This place started small and has grown and that’s because of their amazing food and service. Give it a try if you want more authentic &...
Read moreFood is delicious. The portions are huge. I've tried the chicken fajitas. The ingredients are so fresh and chicken seasoned great. The cheese w Chorizo and tostadas are the best. The quesabirria tacos are also great!! I didn't enjoy the chilaquiles, by preference. I don't like my Tortillas that crispy, and they need more cheese. My son had the torta Cubana, and he loved it! My daughter asked for enchiladas suizas, and they gave her mole ones. Then I asked the waitress because I was confused, and she lied and said they were what we ordered. But when we got the check, it listed mole enchiladas instead of what we ordered. I'm not upset they gave us the wrong ones, I was annoyed that she lied about it. Besides that experience, I've been there 3 times in a month. The rice and beans are also really good. It's pretty authentic! Will keep going. It can get really loud and the place is not very big. But food is great. Maybe don't go on...
