Tapri was like a typical tapri—unorganized, but perhaps that’s part of the tapri experience, even in an American setting. Given that it’s a soft launch with very limited seating and serving capacity, this should be expected. The menu is quite limited for now. When you visit, be prepared to wait and to confirm your orders are on the way. Also, note that there aren’t any sugar substitutes available, so bring your own if you order chai ☕️.
We ordered some starters. The most reviewed and well-rated was the stuffed mirchi, which met some expectations but wasn’t 5-star quality. The paneer tikka was well done but lacked a bit of marination. The naans were good—thin and not chewy. However, the cheese naan could use more cheese, as it lacked flavor. All the sabzi gravies were sweeter than expected, even though we asked for mild spiciness. The dal makhani was good as well, though it could have been a bit denser or more well-cooked, in my opinion.
Chai, which is my Achilles heel, was on par. The serving style is different and unique compared to other Indian restaurants (points for making it more appealing), but they must offer sugar substitutes, or the taste might miss the mark.
For dessert, we ordered jalebi rabri, as they mentioned that everything is made in-house and from scratch. The rabri was good, but the jalebi was soggy, not well done, and felt chewy, though it was warm. I would prefer the rabri as a separate item on the menu—it was my favorite dish, though the quantity could be a bit more for the price.
Overall, it’s important for them to collect feedback during this soft launch. If they really plan to make it a must-go place for Indian food, there’s still a lot to improve on multiple fronts. I would rate it a good try, but not the 5-star rating we’ve seen in Google reviews. Lastly, the service was good, but I suggest they be more confident and provide better ETAs for the next item being served, as the process is a bit hectic and...
Read moreThis is located next door to Chef Soon and Sport Clips. You can find parking in the front as well as plenty in the back. Inside the restaurant is on the smaller side. It wasn’t hard to find a table. Prices are slightly on the expensive side but great quality. Service was good. Our server made sure that our dishes were not super spicy. We ordered tangdi kabab, garlic naan, roganjosh with halal lamb, chettinaadu with white shrimp, mango lassi, irani chai, and mango kulfi. Overall, it’s a 4 out of 5. I think they need to work on drink sizes like for the Irani chat and the prices for some of the desserts. You want to give the customers good value so that they will come back. I’ll come back for the food but I’ll stick with tap water from now on. Desserts I found a better value at the Karak cafe in Lisle.
-tangdi kabab 5 - the description on the website was right. The chicken was really juicy. I loved the spices. Medium spicy but very enjoyable. Make sure you use the mint chutney. -garlic naan 5 - very soft and fluffy. I like to take a piece and dip it into the curry sauces. -roganjosh with halal lamb 5 - curry flavor is more robust than the other one, I really liked all of the spices. The lamb was very tender. -chettinaadu with white shrimp 5 - the curry flavor has a sweeter taste due to the coconut and plenty of smaller size shrimps. -mango lassi 5 - texture and taste are different from the other versions I’ve had but it’s still very tasty. -irani chai 4 - pretty flavorful but I wished it came in a bigger cup or at least a tea pot for the table. For $4 I could have gone to one of those Middle Eastern cafes for a bigger size. -mango kulfi 4 - tastes like regular mango ice cream but with like rose petals sprinkled on them. I don’t think...
Read moreFirst of all, I really wanted to like this place! I have been reading the reviews for a while and couldn’t wait to try it. Tonight I went there with my daughter for dinner, upon walking in we were a little confused. Do we seat ourselves? There are QR codes on all the tables that you can scan and order from, but we didn’t know if that’s what we needed to or if they took our order, so we asked, and right away the server acted annoyed that we asked, not to mention he ignored me completely, only asked my daughter what she wanted to drink. By the way, I’m the one paying not her. I ended up ordering a coke, and when he brought it he handed it to her not me. Wow. We ended up ordering the shishito peppers and tandoori mushroom appetizers that we waited probably 25 min. to receive. Then we made the mistake of ordering entrees, we waited about an hour after the apps to get the entrees. I get it, it’s a Saturday night, you’re busy, but my daughter and I realized all the people around us, some who came after us, received their food and had eaten before we received our food. My daughter even said, “Do they have something against us?” Because that’s exactly how we felt… I had to go ask them if our food was coming out any time soon and if not they could just box it up because we had to go. They brought our food about 10 min. later. The food was really good, so it stinks that the service is awful. The thing is, the wait would have been easier to deal with if there was some acknowledgment. An apology that it’s taking a long time, something, anything, but to be blatantly ignored was honestly insulting. Unfortunately we will...
