I was born and raised in New Mexico, and have been eating New Mexican food for as long as I can remember. I have become incredibly picky about it as I've moved away and come to appreciate truly good New Mexican. I was told of this place by some work friends when I was complaining, not for the first time, that it was impossible to find good Mexican food here (I hate Tex/Mex. Hate it). One night when I was talking homesick I stopped on the way home from work and it was about as close to a religious experience with food as I imagine you could have. It tastes like home! I've since been back numerous times, and have never been anything less than thrilled with my meal. And they use Bueno chile, so I don't know how much more you could ask for!
I have to throw in a word here about the carne adovada. I don't know what they put into it, but it is the strangest carne I have ever tasted in my life, and at first I hated it. I went and ordered it a second time, having forgotten I didn't like it the first, but the second time around I smelled it and remembered it was weird. For whatever reason, this second time, I loved it. It's one of my favorite things there, but I recommend if they don't offer to let you taste the sauce before you order it (which they often do), that you ask. It's polarizing from what I've heard other people say: no one is ambivalent, they either love it or they hate it.
Everything else is what I'd call "normal", except it's so freaking good I'm not sure that's fair to call it. But it's not a weird take on the traditional New Mexican dish the way the carne is.
And get dessert at least enough to try each of their pies. The Mexican chocolate pecan is my favorite.
Go eat here. If you like New Mexican or want a break from the jalapeno-laden Tex-Mex,...
Read moreI am from Northern New Mexico, I grew up eating true home made traditional New Mexican food, completely different then Mexican food or even Tex Mex. I was surprised to find a place on Google search that emphasizes New Mexican. I ordered traditional stacked Chicken Green Chile Enchiladas. They didn't even come close to being New Mexican in any way at all. They looked like a stack of chunky stuff with what looked like heated diced green chile poured on top, not a prepared chile sauce of any sort. The ingredient to me appeared and tasted like they cut up some bland chicken tamales and made a pile and poured regular processed green chile on top. New Mexican Enchiladas are always also topped with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes and onion. And even an egg or two. The complimentary chips and salsa were good. The order included rice and pinto beans. The rice was ok but a little dryand sweet which was odd,, the pinto beans may have been right out of a can, no original flare or flavor of New Mexican pinto beans. I did not order from the lunch menu, I ordered a dinner which was $15 and was what I would call a small serving. I think this is more like a fusion restaurant. Their take on New Mexican food. If you have never eaten real New Mexican food that can still be found at certain restaurants in New Mexico you would probably be content, but for someone who knows and misses New Mexican food this was disappointing. Overall the food seemed clean and fresh, just lacked in flavoring and real New Mexican authenticity. It should not call itself or even associate itself with New Mexican food, nothing was convincing. I felt comfortable eating there and the staff were nice. The place was clean, organized and seemed...
