Y Thao Garden — Restaurant in Hue City

The restaurant is overrated in trip advisor, Google maps and Traveler bible. You can get a lot of restaurant better than this one with much lower price in Hue and Da Nang. We were willing to play high price just for better service, but the service to non-white people are very disappointing and made me felt discriminated. We came there with new friends we met in sinh cafe, so in total 2 Chinese, 2 Korean and 1 Indonesian. We speak English ( not very good, but good enough to make orders and chats) the whole time in the restaurant, but the waiter refused to introduce the menu to us, but she introduced the menu to the white people. We told them we speak English and asked if she can give us some suggestion in making order, then she looked at us in big eyes and then go to talk to the table next to us. At the end of the dinner, a man looked like manager or boss came to talk to waiters trying to guess where did we from and speak funny Korean and Chinese language. Later on he invited white people next to our table to visit his office and leave us alone. Maybe all of these are miss-understanding from us, I don’t know. But we really feel bad after the dinner with bad service and normal foods.

In short, if your white people with a lot of money you can come here, Nice looking restaurant with all standard Vietnam’s food. But if your Koreans, Chinese and other Asian looking guys, I wont recommend you a restaurant that will make you have the feeling of dissemination.

High expectation, low result. After our tour guide hype up this restaurant and the amazing food courses that we will enjoy. It ended with a big flop. The food served is nothing more than street fare food which I had better in other region and/or restraurant.

We had a 6 course lunch (seafood eggroll (native to the region), vegetable soup (plain old vegetable soup), sauted shrimp with garlic) mixed figed salad, banh xeo, steam lotus rice, dessert). So eggroll were good as you can't really go wrong. Vegetable soup is ok, it is normal vegetable cooked in chicken broth. Shrimp is normal not great like a normal takeout (however, not the quality you want from a supposedly high end restraurant), fig salad is good as is the banh xeo (very unique to the region) and las5ly the lotus rice (undercooked) which makes it not very good.

Now on to the service (if I can rate less than 1 star, I would.) They totally ignore most request (I requested ice and they never gave it till I request again at the end). Flagging them down is a pain as they were too busy talking in the back. There were several wait staffs but not actual service being done.

As for the ambience, it is very beautiful.

So don't come here expecting anything amazing. Just expect ok food and...

i ordered Set menu 1, it was delicious, only 200,000vnd and there were so many dishes that I cannot finish, had to ask waitress to pack it for take away. The price might be on the high end based on Vietnamese standards but this is set in a nice grden of a private residence so worth it, in my opinion. It is so much better than a few restaurants that are along the riverside near to lotus lake in the citadel, they actually prepared menus for foreigners and the prices are exorbitant!!! 30,000vnd for steam rice!!

As for the service, the staff are not the all smiles type but they can answer your qns and attend to your needs whenever you ask. Best thing about this restaurant is that they explain what is the dish you are having and how you should eat it, this is especially important when you have been peeping at locals having their food and copying them without knowing exactly what you are having. It is fun and exciting most of the times but at least one of the meals like this at Y Thao...
