A truly rare and unique place where Matcha is elevated to an art form.
I traveled across dozens of countries and hundreds of cities. Visited some of the most sophisticated capitals with their vibrant cafes and tea houses and never came across a place like this one.
Starting from the outside it looks and feels like it has been imagined by the Ghibli Studio and through the influence of some magical force it manifested itself on the corner of an ordinary Vietnamese street. During the day it feels still and frozen in time but after dark it glows with warm light, imbuing the surrounding with the sense of peacefulness.
Upon the entry you cross the barrier from the outer to the inner, from the loud, busy, dirty streets to the quiet, peaceful and clean environment where you can relax and lose track of time.
The world inside is different. It lacks randomness and tamed chaos so often observed in the local businesses. Everything from the furniture and elements of decoration, through the containers and utensils to the aprons worn by staff feels like a part of a single unified thought. They belong together. This seemingly insignificant detail is so inoffensive to the battle-hardened mind of a traveler that it has a soothing effect, putting one’s mind at ease.
The tea house has 4 floors in total, each one increasingly more tranquil. Starting with a bar at the ground floor, where the magic happens and culminating with a rooftop garden on the 3rd floor.
It is a small family run business where members share their passion for Matcha. They possess vast knowledge about it, continuously pursue it and happily share it with others. They are very kind, humble and welcoming.
They offer a wide selection of ceremonial-grade matcha from different prefectures of Japan (such as Kyoto, Fukuoka etc.) in a form of both single origin cultivars as well as custom blends. Each kind has different qualities and flavor profile which can be further amplified by the skilled baristas.
Matcha is served in a clear form, with milk or with yuzu and sparkling water. Every form stimulates different senses but all bring immense pleasure. They are meticulously prepared by the staff who patiently go through the motions of weighing, measuring, mixing and tasting until they deliver the perfect drink. It’s hypnotic to watch them do it.
Forget everything you know about Matcha, forget the flavors you tried somewhere else. This sensual place will open your eyes and redefine your taste. The prices, although somewhat higher, are fully justified through the quality, taste and experience you get.
I will be coming back at every...
