The Ugly Bar! 👎🏼
First, we looked up nearby food options, and so we came to this restaurant that everyone recommended.
When we arrived, the shop owner was trimming the flowers at the door, so we sat in a corner where we would not be disturbed or distracted while dining. We greeted each other in twos and threes on a leisurely afternoon. Although the shop owner was busy tidying up the entrance and sweeping the dust and fallen leaves on the ground, we still maintained a happy mood to dine.
We ordered four dishes in total, totaling 550,000 Vietnamese dong. We didn't dare to drink any beverages because we didn't drink alcohol and had stomach discomfort. When the third dish came, a waiter with an ugly face had a very bad attitude. The following is our conversation with the female store clerk.
The waitress said: You want to drink?
We said: We don’t drink alcohol, and we can’t drink beverages because they upset our stomachs. We had to bring our own bottled water. We put a water bottle with hydration salt on the table and we weren’t even drinking it.
The waitress said: Don’t put water on the table. (Very bad attitude yelling.)
We said: You could have spoken in a nicer manner and we would have accepted it. We haven't even started drinking this bottle of water yet, so how can your attitude be so bad?
The waitress said: We sell water! (Extremely disrespectful to customers, with a look of contempt. Just wants to be greedy.)
We instantly lost our appetite. How could there be a store owner who lacks such basic manners? The feeling is very bad!

Read moreI was ashamed. Ashamed, I tell you, that I was looking for Thai food in Vietnam. My shame dissipated once I was seated and served at The Beauty Bar in Ong Lang.
Nestled on land near a junction of roads, this restaurant offers food and drinks to be ordered by customers and passers-by alike. 🤣. There is a menu that everyone is invited to read and to order from. 🤣🤣.
I asked for the spicy curry paste dish with chicken, and the waitress asked me if I wanted it spicy. I said I did, and she asked me if I was sure. I said "yes", and I heard her relay the order to the chef, in Thai language. The chef questioned the order, confirming that it should be spicy, and I had to chime in.
I speak Thai.
"You're the chef, right. Hey, I lived in Thailand for a while and I can eat spicy food. Can you make that like you make it for Thai people, please?" I asked as politely as I knew how.
Chef made it spicy for me. The dish was cooked well, and it was a larger than expected portion. The spice level walked up to my face and shouted "BANG" at me. I quietly applauded this beneath my shroud of sweat, and drank another beer afterwards, glowing in the drug haze of that chilli.
I need to go back to this restaurant, nestled on land, and sample some more of the dishes that they offer on that menu that I mentioned.

Read moreThe food was good enough. It’s classic Thai fare. Simple but tasty dishes. The owners also seem very friendly. The prices are obscenely expensive for what you get though. There wasn’t a menu on this Google Reviews page when I was deciding where to go so I was unprepared for the prices. I made the mistake of assuming dishes like chicken curry or pad krapow, with ingredients readily available at any Vietnamese supermarket, would be 100k VND or less. This is even accounting for the expected backpacker establishment price hike. I was not prepared for 170k for simple Thai dishes. I know all of these restaurants have been hard hit by COVID so I feel bad posting this but paying such a high price for such simple dishes is out of my price range, seeing as though I work in Saigon with a modest income and am by no means throwing money around on Phu Quoc. If you’re on a budget and trying to spend 100k or less on meals, don’t come here. Expect to pay at least 200k per person. If you have some money to...
