The National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, occupies a Palace probably built around 1570 by Ramdane Pasha. It is located in the lower part of the medina of EL-Djazair in Souk El-Djemâa street. This souk is delivered in this place every Friday hence the name of “Friday market” it was specialized in the sale of pigeons. Due to its location near the administrative center, the djenina, made it a rich, commercial and lively district. In 1783, the Palace was leased to the wealthy merchant Michel Cohen Bacri. Around 1789, it became the property of Hassan Kheznadji, treasurer of the Dey Mohamed Ben Osman, who bought it to donate to his daughter Khdaouedj. After her death, her niece and nephew, N'fissaet Omar, inherited the palace. In 1830, the French state took possession of it, and after having compensated the heirs and made it the first Town Hall of Algiers. In 1860, the sculptor Latour enriched the western part with stuccoes and placed the various chimneys on the occasion of the visit of the Empress Eugénie, to whom Aziza Bacri served as interpreter. It was probably at this time that the entire western part was enlarged. The Palace underwent several transformations and occupations until 1939, when it was assigned to the Crafts department. In 1961, it became the Museum of Popular Arts. In 1987, it was erected as the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.

Le Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires, occupe un Palais bâti vraisemblablement vers 1570 par Ramdane Pacha. Il se situe dans la partie basse de la médina d’EL- Djazair dans la rue Souk El-Djemâa. Ce souk se tenait en ce lieu chaque vendredi d’où le nom de » marché du Vendredi » il était spécialisé dans la vente des pigeons. De part sa situation à proximité du centre administratif, la djenina, en fit un quartier riche, commerçant et animé. En 1783, le Palais fut loué au riche négociant Michel Cohen Bacri . Vers 1789, il devint la propriété de Hassan Kheznadji, trésorier du Dey Mohamed Ben Osman, qui l’acheta pour en faire don à sa fille Khdaouedj . Après la mort de celle-ci, sa nièce et son neveu, N’fissaet Omar, héritèrent du palais. En 1830, l’état Français en prit possession, et après avoir indemnisé les héritiers et en fait la première Mairie d’Alger. En 1860, le sculpteur Latourenrichit la partie ouest de stucs et plaça les différentes cheminées à l’occasion de la visite de l’impératrice Eugénie , à laquelle Aziza Bacri servit d’interprète. C’est sans doute à cette époque, que toute la partie ouest fut agrandie. Le Palais a connut plusieurs transformations et occupations jusqu’en 1939, date à laquelle il fut affecté au service de l’Artisanat. En 1961, il devint Musée des Arts Populaires. En 1987, il est érigé en Musée National des Arts et traditions populaires.
