Alice Springs (originally named Stuart) is a remote town in Australia’s Northern Territory, halfway between Darwin and Adelaide, both 1,500km away. It is virtually at the geographical centre of Australia. Its 1871 origin as part of the Overland Telegraph Line (linking Darwin and Adelaide) is preserved in the vintage buildings and equipment at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve. (the original Alice Springs) Until the early 1930s, Alice Springs was the name given to the waterhole that was discovered and named by Government Surveyor WW Mills in March 1871, while exploring the MacDonnell Ranges during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Alice Springs is named after Alice Todd, wife of the Superintendent of Telegraphs, Sir Charles Todd. Although the waterhole was originally thought to be a spring, the river Todd, which runs past the telegraph station, generally only flows for about 3 weeks every year and then dries up. Yet another attraction dedicated to white people. This was a site once special to traditional owners that we have decided to use to commemorate ourselves. There are countless signs dedicated to white people who have fought in wars. There are then 4 signs with a small amount of history about the land and its history, it is very informative about how white people colonised the area.
Perhaps there is no information about the traditional owners or culture because it is not ours to know, but to me, it feels so sad that we have taken this place from them, to mourn our own people, after killing thousands of them with zero...
Read more29th august 2019 Anzac Hill is nice drive to the hill. First time I did was I thought that my car would roll down while I am trying to drive. As you drive there is information with poster about the war. The parking is small but there is always parking available. Disabled parking is there and there is ramp which can be used. Coming to the top of the hill you can see the macdonald range and view of Alice spring . Meet few visitors from different part of the world and they were just having a stopove in Alice. This is the must place to see when in alice spring and the best thing is the sunset at the macdonald range...
