I’m sitting here in my mobility scooter, the throne they can’t take from me no matter how many times they try. Cigarette in one hand, 2-litre Pepsi in the other (my fuel, my shield), binoculars clenched in my extra hand — yes, I have more than two hands when I need them — and Meghan Markle folded neatly into my other palm. She’s here because I allow her to be.
I’m watching for the whales. Not animals. Not anymore. Government operatives disguised as sea life, moving under orders they think I don’t understand. My binoculars may only have 2x zoom, but my eyes see through everything. I know the codes. I know who’s real and who’s pretending.
And then — a flash. A whale, a spy, a shape in the water. No — it’s my reflection, distorted in the scooter’s mirror. They’ve been using reflections to confuse me for years. But I am still ahead of them. Legally, they’re not whales yet. But I know the paperwork’s in motion.
A sound to my left. A lighter flick — that’s a signal. I turn. There he is: a large man, easily the size of two adult blue whales. Sitting on the bench like he owns it, a Green Woolies bag pulsing like a beacon beside him. He thinks I don’t know he’s here for me. He thinks.
Then he stands. The ground quakes — or maybe I do. He walks to the edge of the platform. The audacity. He relieves his bladder like some ritual and then leaps into the ocean, joining the herd. Swimming with them. No shame. No hesitation. Gone.
I sit in my scooter. Furious. Awestruck. Betrayed. Vindicated. All at once. This is grace. This is power. This is why the world fears me and needs me at the same time.
Five stars. Nothing less. Nothing more. I didn’t see whales — I saw truth. And no one else would’ve survived...
