Please don’t get me wrong, my 4 stars review has nothing with the temple itself 😅 but the landscape and visitor access to the compound are still under construction, and it’s totally reasonable since its development has been relying on donation. This temple seems hidden, or unseen from the main road side. I first spotted this temple from the giant 天上聖母 statue by the river on my Metro trip from CBD to Footscray. It was 10 minutes walking from Metro station, and I found its access way behind an apartment near the bridge. It leads to a rugged parking area beside the compound. The temple compound is consisting of the main gate; the main hall that is dedicated to Mazu Goddess (媽祖) with 7 other altars from Chinese folks religion deity (including the biggest pot outside to worship Heavenly Jade Emperor or 天公) and Mahayana Buddhism; 1 multi purposes hall; 1 other hall for Buddhism activity (still empty); 1 unfinished ancestral hall with an altar of Ksitigarbha Bodhisatva (地藏王菩薩); and the giant statue plaza by the river. Mazu Goddess is one of the most popular divine figure for Chinese immigrant. Her legend is originated from the coastal area of Southern and Southeastern China, and known as the protector of fishermen/sailor. That’s been said, the considered “perfect” area to build her temple is anywhere near water (sea, river, lake).

Beautiful Taoist Temple dedicated to the Chinese Godess of Sea. This Temple is being renovated at the moment so there is a lot of construction going on and some noise coming from the cement works across the river. Two out of three buildings were open and we were captivated by rich adornments of the Gods inside, with elegant bowls of fruit and golden lanterns you can buy to offer to the Gods when you pray. The huge Queen statue stands 16m tall in the middle of the lake that is overgrown with algae. Despite obvious need for upgrades, this Temple is a true gem in this wonderful bend of Maribyrnong river, and well worth a visit. Please bring cash if you want to donate or buy an offering.

People in Melbourne don't know much about this monastery. But this place is really great, just a 20mins drive out of tge city can lead you to this immensely beautiful temple in Footscray, which was built in 2016. For a moment I forgot I was in Melbourne, as I felt lie strolling through a Monastery somewhere in Bhutan. Lovely and pleasant ambiance, the temple priests are very friendly. Also there is not much crowd even on a weekend. But this is one of the must see places in Melbourne. So intricately built, this temple itself a charm.

On arrival I was greeted by members of this glorious temple... I was their to take some photos, as I had watched it being built from the train from when it began being built.... Seeing it up close, I was blown away by its beauty.... Anyone visiting Melbourne should make a special trip by taking a short train ride to Footscray Station , followed by a 15 minute walk down to the Maribyrnong River and to the Temple... Make a day of it, you won;t be sorry.

Beautiful temple, it gives you a peaceful feeling. The volunteers are very welcoming, one of very few temples that would let you take photos inside, and you don’t have to take off your footwear to pray inside. Quite popular with tourists and visitors. The temporary memorial hall is on the right side. Road toward the temple still under heavy construction due to massive apartments building in the area. A must stop over when visiting Melbourne.

Knew about this place when we saw the beautiful statue while driving on the road, and finally able to see the place last week! Such a peaceful place and for a donation of $5, you will receive a bunch of incense that you will be able to make offerings to. Also saw a group of young people practicing the lion dance! Pretty cool! Definitely need to come down here at least once in your lifetime to experience the peace and wonder of this place.
