Worst customer service ever. I had sushi and a salad. I asked cashier if I can pay with a card and cash. And she said no spilt bill allowed. I was going to cancel but the other customer offer me to pay the rest for me. I say thank you to him and I gave him 10 dollars in cash. I was having my food and this cashier girl came to me if I have enough money for my food. I told her he paid for me and I gave him ten. And she saw me and she heard me. And she brought her boss and accusing me for not paying for my food. It's not my fault you didn't charge him. And I offer them to pay the rest of money apart from 10 dollars that I gave him. And it seemed to be a fair solution for both of us. They told me I should pay them not the other customer, and that's my problem, not theirs. And she said she doesn't have to listen to conversation between customers. But she was dealing with us, she heard that he's going to pay for me and you saw I handed the money to him. That makes your fault too not to charge him. Even though I offer to pay the rest, they were very rude, wanted me to pay all over again. Kept telling me that I should pay them not him. Obviously they didn't want to listen or understand what I say. Kept accusing me it's my fault. Thank you for your ridiculous customer service. I won't go back to...

I ordered over the phone for sushi sashimi medium and went to pick it up. Over the phone the lady asked me to repeat the order several times as well as my name so I did. I got to the shop to pick up the order and approached one of the chef, said my name and the order, lid was closed but he acknowledged and gave me the order. Got home realised the order was incorrect so I phoned the shop. THE EXPERIENCE WAS COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND DISHONEST. The chef kept insinuating that I indeed placed the incorrect order (sashimi medium) and caused a scene in the shop WHEN I OFFERED TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE. All I want to do is pick up the right order as I promised the kids that they will get sushi. I explained it is the first time I have ordered something from them and if you look at the menu on Zomato you can not actually see sashimi comes in medium size clearly as it says in big writing SASHIMI PLATTER LARGE underneath. I placed the order for 2 adults and 2 toddler and came home to 2 hungry toddler with no sushi. He just kept going at it and caused such a scene in the store and said quote" it can't be that both the lady and him heard it wrong so I must be wrong " and that "I don't have to come back". ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND IT IS BEYONG INSULTING...

While Asian grocers are awesome to have, most of the time they seriously lack a Japanese range. So when I found that there was a fully Japanese grocery store, I had to attend.

While their store is small, there is plenty of stock and a great variety. I love that there is staff recommendations for people like myself who are not Japanese and have not had a much experience with the products but want to try. I ended up buying a few products from those staff recommendation signs.

Just seeing how many people were in store shows how popular the store is. A lot of people were there for the freshly made sushi. Something I do regret not trying at this time but that's what return trips are for.

The only drawback is accessibility. To get into the store, there is a ledge. As I have a pram, while this was not too hard, I did get help from staff and patrons which was amazing but someone in a wheelchair might find it hard. Also the aisles are very tight. If you have more than a standard size pram, it won't fit so if possible, leave the kids at home 😉 I know I will next time to enjoy the full experience.

Accessibility issues aside, I could not mark them down on that. Everyone is friendly and helpful and I look forward to being a...

If you’re looking for a solid sushi takeaway spot in Melbourne, Hinoki Japanese Pantry in Fitzroy is worth checking out—especially for sushi platters. Not going to lie, when I first opened the box, I wasn’t super impressed with the presentation. It looked a bit more casual than I expected, but by the end of the meal, I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. What really stood out was the quality of the fish—super fresh, and they’re generous with it. They give you more protein than rice, which is the opposite of what a lot of places do. You’re not dealing with huge rice balls and tiny slivers of fish here, which actually makes it a better deal than it first seems (despite the higher price tag). The chirashi bowl was a standout—it’s a great way to try a variety of fish, with nice additions like scallops. If you’re into exploring different textures and flavours, definitely give that one a go. The California and nori maki rolls were decent too—not mind-blowing, but solid. Overall, yeah, it’s on the expensive side, but for Melbourne, I’d say the quality makes it worth it.

2024: The green tea's now back in stock and the same price, $5.20, outstanding! ***** 2024: Following the renos, the pantry is more modern and well stocked with ceremics. However, I can't seem to find my favourite green tea, Ujinotsuyu Aoyanagi (Bancha). I hope they stock it again. ***** 2021: Well for more than a decade, this has been the place I've sourced my Green Tea and the price has only gone up .20c. Which is just astounding. Also given that the supply has dried up around the city. ***** 2010: One of the most authentic Japanese Sushi places I've found in Melbourne as of yet. With a large range of Sushi, Sashimi and even Sake! Furthermore, there's a grocery section if you fancy certain Japanese products, like Plum Wine, Matcha or my favourite Ujinotsuyu Aoyanagi Green Tea. Most of the time, the chefs will make your order on the spot, which is a good window to peek around. With only a few seats in the corner, it's expected of you to take-away. The best Sushi store in this area, easy. *****

Hinoki is terrific for Japanese groceries, and we shop here a few times per month. It's almost entirely imported food, so it's more expensive than more widely-available Australian brands, but the quality more than makes up for it. They stock both a range of Japanese staples, but they also get in a variety of different foods, so we have been able to try lots of new Japanese foods for the fun of it. I use Japanese sauces, stock, and frozen meats and seafoods in my cooking quite a lot now. I make Bento for work lunches, and I love that you can buy fresh sides and pickles in their fridge section. Their sushi is phenomenal, and so reasonably-priced for the quality. Whilst it's not as big as other Japanese groceries in Melbourne, the diversity of product I think makes up for it, and it's also exclusively Japanese goods. Love it!
