This cemetery has bitter sweet memories for me. I never knew my grandfather on my father's side, as he passed away before I was born, but I've always wanted to know as much about him as there was to know. I used to love looking at his war medals when I was young and unfortunately these medals and some photos were all I ever really got to know about him. I found out later in life that he was buried at this cemetery, in what I believe is part of a war memorial section of the grounds. It took several hours of wandering around the beautifully kept, peaceful, and serene grounds before I located his plaque. My own father had never been to see his dad's last resting place, and after telling him that I had found it, we both made plans to visit it together. Unfortunately my father passed away before we ever got the chance to visit it together. I am happy that there is a physical place with such tranquility about it that I can visit to connect with my father's father, and in this way, I feel like I'm connecting three generations together when I'm here, and there is no better place than this to be able to make...

I recently visited Rookwood Cemetery to pay my respects to a dear hiking buddy who passed away from natural causes. The place is vast, and once you step inside, it feels like you're in a different world. The serene atmosphere and the quiet solitude offer a profound sense of peace.

Walking through the cemetery, seeing the photos on the graves makes you reflect on the lives of these wonderful souls. It reminds me of the Quranic verse, “Every soul shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full” (Quran 3:185). This visit served as a poignant reminder of the temporality of this world and the reality of the hereafter.

Visiting often helps one remember that this world is just a fleeting illusion, and true life begins after death. We should strive to live a life worthy enough to find a place in Jannah. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Live in this world as if you are a traveler or a wayfarer.”

Rookwood Cemetery is a place where you can reflect on these truths, and I highly recommend visiting to gain a deeper appreciation of our...

I called today to make query about the size of a grave as i was wanting to lay some turf down for my nephew's burial site. I spoke to the reception staff member (Susie i believe the name was) and not only was i spoken to rudley BUT i had to prompt her to ask the sales team if they were aware of the sizing of graves. No one seemed to know. When i mentioned i wished to lay astro turf down on my nephew's above ground grave, she rudley stated that it was being "cracked down on" and that they would be removing them. This is a place we lay our loved ones to rest, and for a trust who highly regards themselves to be "understanding", maybe speaking with some decency would be expected. I am not looking for sympathy but rather maybe take the time to train your staff to speak to people (whom mind you are grieving) or maybe ask them to find another job? Very, very upset to have this...

Located at East Street Entrance, Lidcombe, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 I would absolutely recommend a visit to Rookwood. It’s so full of history. My group did a tour of the cemetery. We learned so much about it, from when it opened and the circumstances surrounding the start of the cemetery. As part of the tour, we watched three short videos which were very informative. Our guide, Mark Bundy, was absolutely fantastic. He was so full of knowledge and patience. Had no problem answering our questions. He took us to the site of the first Mortuary Station and the Memorial of the Holocaust. Then we went to the War Cemetery Memorial. It was wonderful to have Mark to guide us. It’s a FREE tour also which is great. I am so glad we went here. A really nice to wander through the graves and reflect on the lives of the people buried there. A HUGE Thumbs Up!!! 👍👍👍

Most people visit Rookwood Cemetery on what could be regarded as deeply emotional days. They drive to a particular part of the cemetery, stand around with family and friends, and then witness the final moments of person’s life as their body is laid to rest in the cemetery grounds. But, Rookwood is a lot more than a burial site. The cemetery is also a historical record of Sydney’s modern history. If you get a chance, visit the cemetery and explore an era that you haven’t visited. Maybe join a tour group to learn about the history of the site. Visit the Sydney War Cemetery or the Jewish WWII memorial. I cycle through the cemetery several times a week. There a regular bus service into the cemetery. And there’s plenty of on-street and off-street parking through the cemetery.

On arrival, I felt a bit weirded out, to be honest. It was, like, ‘what am I doing in a Cemetery?’, but it was awesome. Very big - you can’t possibly do it all in a day. I started with the Islamic section, went on the the Catholic section - where I discovered that my place of employment (st Vincent de Paul) had its own section - and after being moved to tears by the quiet grave plaques of people who had no home and possibly no family/friends to bury them, I decided that was enough for one day. But I will go back. The drive out took me past large tombs - also Catholic - and beautiful, the Quakers section, the Buddhist section and many others I haven’t mentioned. Moving and deeply intriguing 💕
