This was the first winery I visited years ago that actually gave me palletable information on the ins and outs of the winery’s various vintages and complexities.
It is such a heaving, complex beast, the winery if you ever get a chance to check out the guts of one on your travels. Everything from planting, protecting, feeding, nurturing (I’m not kidding, Turkey Flat sprayed sunscreen on their vines last vintage! Who woulda thunk it!?) the vines, to the picking, producing, fermenting, bottling, marketing etc etc etc, there are a LOT of moving parts!
And to try and understand them is why some people spend years at university learning the craft. But most wineries won’t give you all of their dirty little secrets (alright, some of them might, but they don’t want to ruin their chance of a sale so it’s unlikely!) that most of the winery workers know. Turkey Flat is the exception for me here.
Not that there were any dirty little secrets to be told this time around, but the cellar door attendant, despite only doing 1 day a week, provided us with some great info on the various vintages, grapes and general goings on, following the Annual Barossa Vintage Festival which was held last weekend.
Go check out the website for more info on the wines, and do yourself a favour and pop in here while you’re up in the BV. It’s a worthwhile experience and you will taste some truly...
Read moreThree of us went to the "Malaysian Street Food" on 15 Nov 19. If you want delicious, authentic Malaysian Street Food at a great price and good serving sizes, then don't come here. The very small sate servings are more suited to an entree if you received sufficient numbers in a serving for your $10-$12. After spending $32 for food and unwilling to spend more, and still be hungry, we headed to the Tanunda Pub for a great countery. The rose wine we had was very nice and reasonably priced. Maybe try not to make a profit on the food to get people in to taste the wines. It also seemed we were the only strangers there as everyone else was on first name basis e.g. family, staff, sub-contractors, l think we may have been the only ones there to actually pay for our food. Will not return, and have already dissuaded some other friends...
Read moreThis is my second visit to Turkey Flat, this time with a group of 25 people for my 30th birthday. The group had a really wonderful time and Turkey Flat staff made it feel like a really special occasion. The group did the $10 tasting experience and we got far more than $10 worth from that tasting, as well as a decent amount of information about each wine. Our host Alex had no trouble managing such a large group, despite many other wineries in the Barossa saying that it is not possible to provide a tasting experience for a group so large. We sat at a long table outside which was sheltered from the weather and had a great, rustic outlook. The Pedro Ximénez was included in the tasting and it was, as usual, mouth wateringly good. There is no doubt that I will be returning to Turkey Flat - as will most others in the group, I...
