Gem in the Heart of Wagga - Don’t Miss the 5 O’Clock Wave! Wagga Beach is absolutely incredible! Who would’ve thought you could find such a serene sandy haven by the river in Wagga Wagga? The golden sand is so soft, it’s the perfect place to unwind and recharge. Whether you’re up for a casual stroll, a picnic, or just some sunbathing, this spot has it all. The peaceful river adds a relaxing vibe to the whole experience, but the highlight has to be the famous 5 o’clock wave! Like clockwork, the river stirs and sends a gentle ripple toward the shore, a quirky but fun phenomenon that adds to the beach’s charm. It’s the perfect reminder to kick back, relax, and enjoy the beauty around you. And if you’re lucky, you might even get to enjoy the picturesque surroundings with some unexpected company—like this happy gentleman in the photo, spreading positive energy with open arms! 🌞 The crystal-clear blue skies made it a perfect day for photos and relaxation. Wagga Beach deserves to be on everyone’s must-visit list. It’s a slice of paradise tucked away in the most surprising location. Bring your family, friends, or just yourself, and soak in the magic of nature right here in Wagga! 🌊🌳 Highly recommend it for a day of pure relaxation and joy!

The coast may be hundreds of kilometres away, but there’s a great alternative on a bend in the Murrumbidgee River, five minutes at most from the CBD. As it happens, Wagga Beach is occasionally rated among the best in the country, the only inland beach to earn such recognition. Wrapped in kurrajongs, river red gums and yellow box, there’s an accommodating golden sandy strip next to the river’s shallow languid waters. Flanking the sand you’ve got shaded grassy areas for barbecues and picnics, along with a playground for kids. The natural setting supports rich wildlife, and if you’re lucky you may see an echidna, squirrel glider or platypus. Meanwhile the beach can be a stepping stone for a kayak adventure down the river, or a hike on a stretch of the 42-kilometer Wiradjuri walking track, which weaves through the city and its immediate countryside.

The Riverside Adventure Playground is AMAZING!! The thoughtful design has incorporated countless activities for children of all ages including slides, rope climbing, swings, trampolines, flying fox and water track equipment. We took our 2yo with his 4 & 6 yo cousins who all had a fantastic time. The high quality soft-fall base ensures safe play and there is plenty of seating for the folks as well as some covered tables which will undoubtedly be used for birthday parties every weekend. There were lots of kids and adults at the park when we went yet the arrangement of the playground prevented it from feeling crowded. Due to high water levels, we didn't get to experience the infamous Wagga Beach itself though the area is quite picturesque and is obviously loved by the locals. There are walking tracks and bathroom facilities.

"The pilgrimage was long, but the wave was... shy."

I drove a solid 6.5 hours from country Victoria to witness the legendary 5 o'clock Wave at Wagga Wagga Beach. I even packed a surfboard (and a lot of snacks), fully prepared to become one of the chosen few to ride this mystical ripple. As the clock hit 4:59, the anticipation in the air was thicker than the mosquitoes. And then... well, nothing happened. Not a splash, not a ripple, just flat, tranquil water—as if the river was mocking me.

But don’t be fooled. The 5 o’clock Wave is REAL, I swear... I just wasn’t deemed worthy enough this time. You see, the wave only shows itself to the most loyal Waggarian believers, and I clearly need to put in more miles to earn my stripes.

The locals will swear by it—heck, I even met a guy at the pub who said he once saw his mate’s cousin's dog surfing it, but you know how these things go. Despite the absence of said wave, I still feel enlightened. The legend grows stronger every day, and I consider myself a convert.

For anyone planning to make the journey: bring hope, a sturdy sense of humor, and maybe a deck chair for the wait. It’s out there... somewhere. 🌊

10/10 will try again....
